Erfolg oder Misserfolg, Annahme oder Ablehnung sind allesamt Situationen und Gefühle, die Akklamationen hervorrufen. Das Kolloquium wird die Strukturbildung der Akklamation von der Aufklärung bis in die Gegenwart hinein hinterfragen. In einem Dialog zwischen Theologie, Kunstgeschichte und Literaturwissenschaft soll untersucht werden, wie in Texten und Bildern Formen der Akklamation zur Darstellung kommen und welche Funktion sie übernehmen.

Sarah Lightman is an artist, writer and Faculty member at The Royal Drawing School, London. She attended the Slade School of Art for her BA and MFA, University of Glasgow for her PhD and was an Honorary Research Fellow at Birkbeck, University of London (2018-21). She edited the multi-award-winning Graphic Details: Jewish Women’s Confessional Comics in Essays and Interviews (McFarland, 2014), published her autobiographical graphic novel, The Book of Sarah (Myriad Editions and Penn State UP, 2019) and co-edited Jewish Women in Comics: Bodies and Borders (Syracuse UP, 2023).

In postwar Europe, synagogue architecture was culturally categorized as an element of Jewish heritage that appeared to be isolated from the common heritage of a city or town – wherever a synagogue stood. At first, synagogues were not considered a shared but a distinct patrimony of a place. A shift in such a state of affairs could have been observed in the last three decades that witnessed a ‘rediscovery’ of synagogues. Though one can still find abandoned synagogues in small towns, in most of the bigger municipalities, these buildings were ‘rediscovered’ as a part of local history and culture and thus became part of the common heritage. In many regions of Europe, the ‘rediscovery’ of the former synagogues led to their restoration and opening to the public, and in rare cases, to their reuse by Jewish communities.

These processes have already been quite well researched in western other parts of Europe. A desideratum, however, is approach to the Jewish architectural heritage in those East-Central European territories, whose state affiliation changed after 1945 and whose population was exchanged. For example, in the former Eastern German territories, synagogues still standing at the end of the war became a foreign body in the urban space in a double sense. They neither belonged to the heritage of the new inhabitants, understood as ‘national’ or ‘own’, nor were they clearly attributable to the heritage of the pre-war German population. Synagogues were, therefore, not ‘hostile’ buildings, but in any case, they were irritating as characteristic objects of architecture. A contributing factor was that Jewish communities lasted only in a few cities in these areas.  

The aim of the conference is a historicization of the processes of rediscovery in the recent past. We invite contributions linking the historical dimension in dealing with the Jewish architectural heritage with current developments in this field. The focus will be on the historical, political and cultural preconditions and present processes having an impact on the handling of the Jewish built heritage. The key actors and decision-makers should also be taken into account. Therefore, the connection of the micro and macro levels is indispensable for the understanding of these developments because the impact of local actors and political decisions at the central level are closely interrelated.  Global and memory culture trends have also contributed to the interest or disinterest in the respective religious buildings. In addition, transnational networks that influenced the preservation of synagogues will be considered, for example, in the context of the Polish-German dialogue.

As Great Power competition in the Indo-Pacific accelerates, South East Asia has emerged as an arena in which strategic rivalries are played out. Japan has abiding economic and security interests in the region and is deeply engaged with its multilateral institutional architecture. As part of its more proactive international diplomacy in recent years, Tokyo has sought to strengthen relations with both ASEAN and a number of individual member states through the “Strategic Partnership” mechanism. It has worked to build support for its vision of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” in tandem with the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific and anticipates the official announcement of a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic engagement. But attention has become focused on individual bilateral Strategic Partnerships, especially with Vietnam and the Philippines, which share Japanese concerns about maritime security. Security cooperation with the Philippines, for example, has recently been quadrilateralized with the US and Australia. This presentation examines the objectives and activities of these Strategic Partnerships, and assesses their future prospects, to offer insights into how Japan seeks to navigate Great Power competition in South East Asia.

Thomas Wilkins is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney and Scholar in Residence at the German Institute for Japan Studies. His research focuses on Japan's security relations within the Indo-Pacific region. He has authored numerous publications and policy reports on this subject and his most recent monograph is entitled Security in Asia-Pacific: The Dynamics of Alignment. He is currently researching a monograph on Japan’s Strategic Partnership relations.

Takashi Terada is Professor of International Relations at Doshisha University, Kyoto. He was previously an assistant professor at the National University of Singapore, professor at Waseda University, a visiting fellow at the University of Warwick, and a Japan scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center. His work focuses mainly on international political economy in the Indo-Pacific. His latest works include “Politics on TPP/CPTPP: Turning Japan into One of the World’s Major FTA Powers” in Critical Review of Abe Administration (Routledge, forthcoming). Professor Terada will offer a commentary on Professor Wilkins’ presentation, before opening the floor to the audience for a Q&A session.

Sie weckten um 1990 Hoffnungen auf ein Ende des Systemgegensatzes und einen dauerhaften Frieden mit entsprechenden Dividenden, ja auf ein Ende der Geschichte. Was ist nach dreißig Jahren von diesen Erwartungen geblieben? Und was ist von den Zeitgenossen zu halten, die schon lange vor 1989 gewusst haben wollen, dass das Ende vertrauter Lebenswelten und Konfliktlagen bevorsteht? Wie verhält sich vor diesem Hintergrund die analytische Tätigkeit des Historikers zur eigenen Zeitzeugenschaft – und wie die Erinnerungen der Bürgerrechtlerin zu politischer Vereinnahmung und historiographischer Fremdinterpretation?

Wie steht es um die bis in die Zeit der Aufklärung zurückreichende Vorstellung, dass ein universeller Prozess der Verbesserung  – allen Rückschlägen zum Trotz  – in Wirtschaft, Gesellschaft und Politik wirksam ist? Indizien für einen Umbruch sind die Kumulation von Krisenerfahrungen: die Finanzkrisen ab 2007, die Migrationskrisen um 2015 und die Covid-Pandemie 2020-2022. Auch die Klimakrise und die Frage, wie menschliches Verhalten und vor allem die globale Erwärmung die Überlebensbedingungen für Mensch und Tier irreversibel verschlechtern. Auch wenn es nicht an apokalyptischen Szenarien mangelt, so bestimmen doch nach wie vor, wenn auch oft implizit, Fortschrittserwartungen und -versprechen die öffentlichen und massenmedialen Diskurse. Dies betrifft Themen wie Emanzipation und Gleichberechtigung, Energie und andere Wenden, Wirtschaftswachstum, alle Formen von Social Engineering und die vielfältigen Bemühungen, eine ungerechte Vergangenheit zu »reparieren«. Nicht zuletzt versprachen die beiden Parlamentspräsidentinnen – die deutsche und die französische – anlässlich der Gedenkfeier »60 Jahre Elyséevertrag« im Januar 2023 weiteren Fortschritt. Yaël Braun-Pivet erklärte sogar: »le progrès est franco-allemand«. Das Podium diskutiert weniger die metaphysische Frage nach der Existenz und dem Fortbestand eines universellen historischen Fortschritts als vielmehr die Bedeutung der Fortschrittsrhetorik im öffentlichen Diskurs.

Diese Erfahrungen der letzten Jahre sollen Anlass sein für Überlegungen, die weniger eine Apokalypse prophezeien als untersuchen, wie einzelne historische Akteure grundlegende Brüche erwartet, vorhergesagt und antizipiert haben, die dann für die Mehrheit der Zeitgenossen völlig unerwartet eintraten. Inwieweit kann »das Ende« als grundlegende Kategorie mithelfen, wenn man die eigene Gegenwart als Teil des historischen Wandels begreifen will, der über sie hinweggehen und in eine unbekannte Zukunft führen wird? The University of Duisburg‐Essen (UDE), the German Historical Institute in Washington (GHI) and the American Historical Association (AHA), in cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Center for Integration and Migration Research (InZentIM), the Institute for the Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) and the Centre for Global Cooperation Research (KHK/GCR21), are pleased to announce the third International Seminar in Historical Refugee Studies, which will be held at the Centre for Global Cooperation Research (KHK/GCR21) in Duisburg, July 4–7, 2023.

The purpose of this seminar is to promote the historical study of refugees, who are too often regarded as a phenomenon of recent times. By viewing the problem of refugees from a historical perspective, the seminar seeks to complicate and contextualize our understanding of peoples who have fled political or religious conflicts, persecution, and violence. By bringing together 14 advanced PhD students and early postdocs from different parts of the world whose individual research projects examine refugees in different times and places, we intend to give a sense of purpose to this emerging field of study and demonstrate the value of viewing the plight of refugees from a historical perspective.

We invite contributions from recent PhDs, as well as young scholars in the final stages of their dissertations. In addition to historians, we also encourage applications from researchers working in the fields of sociology, political science, anthropology, ethnic and area studies. Possible contributions include:

• Studies of refugee movements and exile diasporas in various periods and places;
• Studies of the ethnic, gendered, racial, religious, and other characteristics of refugee groups and how they impact on reception policies and processes;
• Studies of reception and aid policies, and on the repercussions of refugees on host states and societies;
• Studies of the changing inter‐state framework of refugee movements, such as international or inter‐imperial cooperation, the role of international governmental or non‐ governmental actors, humanitarian organizations, etc.;
• Studies of the infrastructures of exile (camps, networks, economies, regulations)
• Studies of the conceptual history of refugees and exile (legal history, administrative practice, cultural history, etc.)

Papers will be pre‐circulated five weeks before the seminar to allow maximum time for peers and invited senior scholars to engage in discussions on the state of the field. The workshop language will be English. The organizers will cover basic expenses for travel and accommodation. The seminar is hosted by Jan C. Jansen (UDE), Dane Kennedy (George Washington University) and Simone Lässig (GHI). The participants will be joined by a group of leading senior scholars in the field of refugee history, including Delphine Diaz (University of Reims‐Institut universitaire de France), Ilana Feldman (George Washington University), Peter Gatrell (University of Manchester) and Susanne Lachenicht (University of Bayreuth).

The seminar will bring together junior scholars from Europe and North America who are nearing completion of their doctoral dissertations. We plan to invite up to sixteen doctoral students from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss their dissertation projects. The organizers welcome proposals from doctoral students working on any aspect of the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century German-speaking Central Europe or on topics in European, transnational, comparative or global history that have a significant German component. For the 2023 seminar we especially invite proposals that connect German and Italian history. Doctoral students working in related fields – including art history, legal history, and the history of science – are also encouraged to apply. The discussions will be based on papers (in German or English) submitted six weeks in advance. The seminar will be conducted bilingually, in German and English; therefore fluency in both languages is a prerequisite. The organizers will cover travel and lodging expenses.

We are now accepting applications from doctoral students whose dissertations are at an advanced stage (that is, in the write-up rather than research stage) but who will be granted their degrees after June 2023. Damit machen sie unbekannte Orte und Räume  ausfindig, weil diese die Geltung von Wissen bestimmen. So wird die Bischofsaula zum Hörsaal, das Kloster zum Innovationslabor und die königliche Kanzlei zum Ordnungsstifter: Es werden Wissensräume geschaffen, die es zu ergründen gilt. Das Online-Seminar Quo vadis öffnet einen deutsch-französischen Diskussionsraum für Doktoranden und Doktorandinnen wie für fortgeschrittene Masterstudierende, deren Projekte Methoden und Theorien dieser  Forschungszweige als analytische Zugänge anwenden. Auf Grundlage einer ausgewählten wissenschaftlichen Publikation soll die im Projekt angewandte Methode oder verfolgte Theorie vorgestellt werden, um damit einhergehende  Probleme im konkreten Arbeiten gemeinsam zu diskutieren und Lösungen zu finden. Ziel ist es, junge Nachwuchswissenschaftler und Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen miteinander in Kontakt zu bringen: In sieben Sitzungen stellen sie ihre Projekte sowie einen Schlüsseltext für ihre Untersuchung vor. Diese Texte werden den Teilnehmenden vorab zugesandt. Das Online-Seminar beschränkt sich nicht auf die historische Mediävistik, sondern profitiert von interdisziplinären Zugängen u. a. aus der  Digital History, Romanistik, Germanistik und Soziologie.

This presentation aims to shed light on two new perspectives regarding Tsunanori’s reign and his engagement with early modern scholarship. Firstly, it will examine the standing of primarily Confucian scholars within the Kaga domain, their affiliation with Tsunanori, and his initiatives to support them. To what extent can he be considered a patron of early modern scholarship? Secondly, the role of knowledge and scholarship in Tsunanori’s position within the political system will be investigated, along with the extent to which his education and his academic endeavours shaped his interactions with other rulers and prominent figures. While Tsunanori’s (diplomatic) initiatives to strengthen ties with the shogunate through Noh theatre are well-documented, this presentation seeks to explore the less charted territory of whether he engaged in what might be termed “Confucian diplomacy”.

Michael Dietrich is a PhD candidate at Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg. He studied Japanese Studies and History at Halle and Keio University. His research focusses on spaces of knowledge production and the development of academic structures in the context of local rule in early modern Japan. Taking Kaga domain (today’s Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures) as a case study, he is investigating the role of transregional networks of scholars, as well as the role of „learned lords“ (kōgaku-daimyō) in the development of a local, pre-modern knowledge society at the end of the 17th century. He has been a PhD Student at the DIJ since September 2022.

Dr Kokou Azamede is Associate Professor in the Department of German Studies of the University of Lomé. His research focuses on transcultural studies, German missions and colonialism, and German colonial photography in West Africa. He has received postdoctoral fellowships from the Hanns Seidel, Volkswagen, and Fritz Thyssen Foundations, as well as from the German Academic Exchange Service and the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa. He is the 2022 laureate of the Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm Award.

The workshop is designed to show participants the methods of studying knowledge transfer from different perspectives: architectural, historian, and social to give them a range of tools for approaching such topics. The topics distinguish transfer methods in theory and in practice discussing real examples and study cases. 

The tutor, Olha Tikhonova will show the methods and examples for finding influences from leading European treatises and famous built models on Polish-Lithuanian residential defensive architecture, to define the origin of bastion castles in Polish-Lithuania in the 17 centuries.    

The tutor, Alena Bagro will show examples of possible ways in which the idea of building bastea fortifications from Western European countries could be borrowed by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as practical methods of comparative analysis of European fortifications and the fortifications that spread in the south-eastern frontier of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the 17th century.

The Kishida administration has made clear the roadmap for the next 10 years of the Basic Policy for Green Transformation (GX) Realization. The most important content of this roadmap is Growth-oriented Carbon Pricing Architecture, consisting of GX Economic Transition Bonds, emission trading system and carbon charge system.

The Growth-oriented Carbon Pricing Concept in Japan refers to a set of policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions through a market-based approach that incentivizes the use of low-carbon technologies and practices. The concept involves imposing a carbon tax on industries and sectors that emit significant amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, with the revenue generated from the tax being reinvested into the development and implementation of clean energy technologies and infrastructure. The goal of the concept is not only to reduce emissions but also to promote sustainable economic growth and job creation, by encouraging innovation and investment in low-carbon industries. The concept is part of Japan’s broader strategy to address climate change and achieve its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

Tokutaro Nakai has been Executive Advisor, Nippon Steel Corporation since 2022. He joined Japan’s Ministry of Finance in 1985 and mainly worked at the Budget Bureau. In 2011, after the Great East Japan Earthquake, he was transferred to the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and worked as Director-General for the Environmental Policy Bureau. From 2020 to 2022 he worked as Vice Minister of the Environment, MOE.  

Nobuyuki Kinoshita has been President & CEO, Tokyo Financial Exchange Inc. since 2018. He joined Japan’s Ministry of Finance in 1977 and then spent 12 years at Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA). He also acted as an Executive Director of the Bank of Japan from 2010 to 2014, before he was appointed as a Senior Advisor to Aflac (American Family Life Assurance Company) Japan from 2014 to 2018.

This model will be presented through an analysis of the first translation of Homer into German in 1537/8. Simon Schaidenreisser’s Odyssee offers numerous insights into social norms, ideals, and difficult issues in the early modern period. For example, core ideas about poetry, politics, and religion, about morality, masculinity, and family, and about guilt, misfortune, and death are addressed in the invocation of the muse and the assembly of the gods at the beginning of Homer’s epic.

Regina Toepfer is the Chair of German Philology at the University of Würzburg, the Spokesperson of the German Research Foundation Priority Programme 2130 ‘Early Modern Translation Cultures’, and the President of the Medievalists’s Society (Mediävestenverband). Her research interests include translated literature, narratology, and gender studies. She recently published a study on Infertility in Medieval and Early Modern Europe: Premodern Views on Childlessness (2022).

The second day of the seminary “Alpinism worldwide – Mountains and Society” we will start with a talk by Bernhard Viel “From the Bible to the Screen. A short history of European Alpinism and the Genre of “Bergfilm””. At the evening Joyce Azzam will speak about the Lebanese perspective of Alpinism “The Transformative Power of Lebanese Mountains: A Strategy for Rural Tourism Development and Youth Empowerment in Lebanon”.

“From the Bible to the Screen. A short history of European Alpinism and the Genre of “Bergfilm””

In the beginning, the Bible tells us that on the third day, according to the Book of Genesis, the Lord created the land and the sea. This marked the genesis of European alpinism, as demonstrated by Bernhard Viel in his panoramic view of alpine history. During this time, there was an effort to reconcile the natural history explanation for the formation of the Alps, which had been established since the 18th century, with the creation report. In the 19th century, scientific interest prevailed, and the gods were banished. Climbing mountains, once feared, became fashionable to gain insights into the Earth's history and to be enchanted by the newfound beauty of the mountain landscapes. However, this fascination soon gave rise to a heroic and national ethos, with men and women driven by the ambition to demonstrate courage, manliness, and the ability to rise to challenges.

After World War I, the mountains were conquered by the film industry, transforming them into playgrounds for restless urban recreational enthusiasts. The demystification of the alpine landscapes coincided with their romantic portrayal in the new mass medium. Bernhard Viel illustrates this transformation through the example of Luis Trenker, a South Tyrolean mountaineer born in 1892, who contributed to the international acclaim of the revolutionary ‘mountain film’ genre with movies like ‘Berge in Flammen’ (1932) [English title: ‘The Doomed Battalion’]. This genre has since influenced the aesthetics of war, adventure, and sports films.

‘The Transformative Power of Lebanese Mountains: A Strategy for Rural Tourism Development and Youth Empowerment in Lebanon’

This study proposes the utilization of mountaineering and hiking activities in Lebanon as a catalyst for promoting rural and environmental tourism while also fostering a sense of citizenship among the youth. By leveraging the popularity of mountaineering and nature-based recreation, this approach seeks to revive tourism in rural areas while concurrently nurturing a stronger connection between the younger generation and their communities. Through the physical and mental challenges that mountaineering presents, participants are able to transcend their limitations and tap into their inner strength, building confidence and resilience that can be applied to all areas of their lives. This transformative power of mountaineering can inspire individuals to embrace new perspectives, cultivate a greater appreciation for nature, and develop a sense of interconnectedness with the world around them. Ultimately, it is hoped that this approach will not only promote tourism and civic engagement but also contribute to the holistic development of the individuals involved.

Bios:

Bernhard Viel, born in Munich in 1958, is a PhD in German studies and history. His books and essays are dedicated to prominent figures in the intellectual life of the 19th and 20th centuries. He resides as a freelance author in Berlin and Munich.
Joyce Azzam was born on June 24, 1984. She holds the record of being the only Lebanese woman to complete the Seven Summits Challenge. Azzam earned a PhD in landscape & environment management from La Sapienza University of Rome. She has been designated as Goodwill Ambassador for Himalayan Life International.

These connections and mutual influences are of course well known. More holistic approaches to address them have already been introduced. One Health, for example, explicitly takes into consideration that human health rests on a healthy environment. However, there is a tendency to develop such new concepts by building on European discourses hinged on nature/culture distinctions that differentiate between human and nonhuman worlds. The widely discussed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) demonstrate this. This has of course its practical merits. Political authority is just as limited as capital to pursue more sustainable practices or the willingness of interest groups to support them, which makes a portfolio or building block approach to sustainability most practical. Yet, the past crises have shown the limitations of such approaches.

The philosophical traditions of South, East, and Southeast Asia know the metaphor of Indra’s Net (Sanskrit: Indrajāla, Japanese: indara-mō因陀羅網) to express the fundamental interconnectedness and interdependence of all existence. With this frame as an inspiration, this workshop aspires to explore holistic multispecies worldviews stemming from intellectual traditions found across South, Southeast, and East Asia. Instead of remaining within Indra’s Net of inescapable interconnection and interdependence while remaining blind to it, this workshop will critically connect recent theoretical debates to concrete case studies in order to advance programs for achieving social and environmental justice.

The Wiener Holocaust Library’s current exhibition, Holocaust Letters, examines Holocaust-era private correspondence as sites of knowledge production as well as for their traces of the material past, including enforced Jewish migration.

With the soon-to-launched virtual Holocaust Letters exhibition as a starting point, this virtual panel will explore new ways and research into thinking about archives, artifacts and other primary sources, including material sources as well as those not held in traditional archives to help us gain deeper insight into the history of Jewish refugees in transit and the knowledge those migrants possessed, produced, transmitted, or lost.

The panelists will discuss what happens when migrants leave their homes and try to convey both the sense of loss and the disorienting experience of learning to live somewhere new, in correspondence and artifacts that capture experiences before, during or after their migration. In terms of correspondence, how are their words crafted and understood, depending on who they are writing to and when? How do Holocaust-era letters, photographs, and other artifacts communicate experiences? What happens to the “archive” in the context of transoceanic migration or persecution, such as the Holocaust?

This event is organised as part of the Holocaust Letters exhibition events series organised by the Holocaust and Genocide Research Partnership in partnership with the German Historical Institute London, the German Historical Institute Washington with its Pacific Office at UC Berkeley, and the California Institute of Technology.

Awadhendra Sharan is Director and Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi. His research interests are in the fields of urban and environmental studies. He is the author of Dust and Smoke: Air Pollution and Colonial Urbanism. India, c.1860–c.1940 (2020) and In the City, Out of Place: Nuisance, Pollution, and Dwelling in Delhi, c.1850–2000 (2014). His ongoing research is on climate thinking and urbanism in India.

Art can be a powerful force in shaping the way we see and think about the world: pictures craft our ideas of beauty and ugliness, good and bad, power and weakness. This lecture traces how medieval Christian images of Jews, originally designed to aid religious devotions, made Christians look at Jews with new curiosity and interest, and drew their attention to previously unnoticed aspects of Jewish life and  looks. As images of Jews evolved from benign but outdated Hebrews to caricatured usurers and demonic sorcerers, Christian society developed new – and increasingly hostile – ideas about and policies toward  Jews, whose effects have endured to this day.

Sara Lipton is Professor of History at the State University of New York, Stony Brook and a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America the Royal Historical Society (UK). She is currently a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. Her most recent book is Dark Mirror: The Medieval Origins of Anti-Jewish Iconography (2014).

Auf Grundlage einer ausgewählten wissenschaftlichen Publikation soll die im Projekt angewandte Methode oder verfolgte Theorie vorgestellt werden, um damit einhergehende  Probleme im konkreten Arbeiten gemeinsam zu diskutieren und Lösungen zu finden. Ziel ist es, junge Nachwuchswissenschaftler und Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen miteinander in Kontakt zu bringen: In sieben Sitzungen stellen sie ihre Projekte sowie einen Schlüsseltext für ihre Untersuchung vor. Diese Texte werden den Teilnehmenden vorab zugesandt. Das Online-Seminar beschränkt sich nicht auf die historische Mediävistik, sondern profitiert von interdisziplinären Zugängen u. a. aus der  Digital History, Romanistik, Germanistik und Soziologie.

Heute verändert der russische Krieg gegen die Ukraine Rahmungen auch des deutschen Gedenkens an den Zweiten Weltkrieg. Der Krieg ist von neuen Kriegsverbrechen mitgeprägt. Er vertieft und erweitert Gräben, die die osteuropäischen Erinnerungskulturen verschiedener Opfer des deutschen Kriegs gegen die Sowjetunion durchziehen, auch, indem er zur weiteren Nationalisierung der Geschichtsbilder beiträgt. Damit stehen deutsche Gedenkstätten vor der Aufgabe, deutsche Kriegs- und NS-Verbrechen an einer multinationalen Opfergruppe in neuen Perspektivierungen adäquat zu thematisieren und darzustellen. Zugleich haben sie vorschnellen Instrumentalisierungen und Engführungen des Gedenkens vorzubeugen.

Auf dem Podium diskutieren Vertreter:innen der Gedenkstätten Lager Sandbostel, Stalag 326 (VI K) Senne, Ehrenhain Zeithain sowie Bergen-Belsen gewandelte Herausforderungen, notwendige konzeptionelle Änderungen und bewahrenswerte Kontinuitäten der deutschen Erinnerung an das Schicksal sowjetischer Kriegsgefangener des Zweiten Weltkriegs. 

Die Podiumsdiskussion setzt in Kooperation mit dem Hannah-Arendt-Institut für Totalitarismusforschung e.V. an der Universität Dresden die Veranstaltungsreihe "Der russische Krieg gegen die Ukraine. Geschichte - Politik - Gedenken" fort. Die Reihe bringt in loser Folge Vertreter:innen unterschiedlicher Fachdisziplinen in wechselnden Formaten zusammen, um wesentliche Aspekte von Kriegsführung, Berichterstattung und öffentlichen Diskursen in aktueller und historischer Perspektive zu beleuchten. Dazu gehören das humanitäre Völkerrecht, Ikonografie und Rhetoriken des Kriegs, Fragen von Kultur und Umwelt, die Dynamiken europäischer Erinnerungskulturen und Probleme historischer Analogien. Die Gesamtreihe wird von der Gedenkstätte Lager Sandbostel, dem Voksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V., der Max-Weber-Stiftung und weitere Kooperationspartnern organisiert.

Der Begriff der diplomatic capital wurde ausgehend von europäischen Erfahrungen entwickelt (vgl. Badel, Revue historique, 2022-3, Nr. 703) und wird als analytisches Konzept fruchtbar gemacht, um die besondere Relevanz solcher Städte im Kontext der Umstrukturierungen der internationalen Beziehungen seit 1945 zu untersuchen. Das zielt auch, aber nicht nur, auf Städte, in denen internationale Organisationen ihren Sitz haben, in denen regelmäßig Konferenzen von Nichtregierungsorganisationen oder Kongresse von Aktivisten stattfinden oder in denen in sonstigen »Foren« diplomatische Gespräche geführt werden – ohne dass diese Städte unbedingt Sitz einer Regierung sein müssen.

Während sich die diplomatischen Hauptstädte bis 1945 im atlantischen Raum konzentrierten, haben sie sich seither auf allen Kontinenten verbreitet, nicht zuletzt weil die entkolonialisierten Staaten auf diese Weise am Funktionieren der internationalen Ordnung teilhaben konnten. Der Workshop wird deshalb primär außereuropäische Städte betrachten, die sich während und nach dem Kalten Krieg behaupten konnten. So soll auch das analytische Potenzial des Konzepts geprüft werden, die Transformationen sowohl des Multilateralismus als auch der jeweiligen regionalen und kommunalen Räume nach 1945 zu erfassen.

La figuration n’est pas tout entière livrée à la fantaisie expressive de ceux qui font des images. On ne figure que ce que l’on perçoit ou imagine, et l’on n’imagine et ne perçoit que ce que l’habitude nous a enseigné à discerner. Le chemin visuel que nous traçons spontanément dans les plis du monde dépend de notre appartenance à l’une des quatre régions de l’archipel ontologique : animisme, naturalisme, totémisme ou analogisme. Chacune de ces régions correspond à une façon de concevoir l’ossature et le mobilier du monde, d’en percevoir les continuités et les discontinuités, notamment les diverses lignes de partage entre humains et non-humains. Masque yup’ik d’Alaska, peinture sur écorce aborigène, paysage miniature de la dynastie des Song, tableau d’intérieur hollandais du XVII^e siècle : par ce qu’elle montre ou omet de montrer, une image révèle un schème figuratif particulier, repérable par les moyens formels dont elle use, et par le dispositif grâce auquel elle pourra libérer sa puissance d’agir. Elle nous permet d’accéder, parfois mieux que par des mots, à ce qui distingue les manières contrastées de vivre la condition humaine. En comparant avec rigueur des images d’une étourdissante diversité, Philippe Descola pose, dans son livre Les formes du visible, magistralement les bases théoriques d’une anthropologie de la figuration.

Médaille d’or du CNRS, professeur émérite au Collège de France, Philippe Descola développe une anthropologie comparative des rapports entre humains et non-humains qui a révolutionné à la fois le paysage des sciences humaines et la réflexion sur les enjeux écologiques de notre temps.

Deutschland und Russland – es gibt nur wenige Staaten auf der Welt, deren Beziehungen in den vergangenen hundert Jahren so nachhaltig von Revolution, Terror und Massengewalt sowie von der Suche nach Abgrenzung und Verständigung geprägt waren. Diese widersprüchlichen Verflechtungen prägen die gemeinsame Wirklichkeit und immer wieder auch das Weltgeschehen – auch heute.

Stefan Creuzberger erzählt die spannungsreiche Geschichte einer Epoche, die von dramatischen Zäsuren, Wechselwirkungen und Veränderungen bewegt ist. Seine Darstellung will historisch interessierte Leserinnen und Leser für ein einfühlsames Verstehen der mitunter verwickelten, aber in jedem Fall faszinierenden Beziehungsgeschichte von Deutschen und Russen gewinnen.

Stefan Creuzberger ist Professor für Zeitgeschichte an der Universität Rostock und Leiter der Forschungs- und Dokumentationsstelle des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern zur Geschichte der Diktaturen in Deutschland. Er ist Experte für deutsche und russische Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert und u. a. Mitglied der Gemeinsamen Deutsch-Russischen Geschichtskommission. Creuzberger diskutiert beim »Divan historique« mit Paul Gradvohl. Gradvohl ist Professor der Universität Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne und forscht an der UMR Sirice über die Geschichte Mitteleuropas, also jenes Teils Europas, dessen Schicksal nicht zuletzt vom deutsch-russischen Verhältnis bestimmt wurde. Corine Defrance (UMR Sirice) und Ulrich Pfeil (Univ. Lothringen) moderieren die Diskussion.

Welche Optionen stehen hinter der Wahl der Sprache, in der die Regesten und ihre Kommentare verfasst werden? Stehen Regesten und Editionen in Konkurrenz zueinander, oder ergänzen sie sich? Verlieren sie in absehbarer Zeit ihren Wert durch den inzwischen üblichen Rückgriff auf lexikographische Analysen, oder bleibt ihnen ein eigener Raum - insbesondere für die Indexierung, die genaue Identifizierung (Personen, Orte, Glossare, ...)? Der tote Körper ist weit mehr als ein physikalisches Objekt. Die relevante Zuschreibung erfolgt in einem kulturellen Rahmen, der darüber entscheidet, ob es sich um einen Lebenden oder eine Sache handelt. Am Beispiel des Mittelalters zeigt der Vortrag, wie diese Konstruktion erfolgte. Dabei verbindet er die naturwissenschaftlichen und archäologischen Befunde mit den Belegen aus den verschiedenen Schriftquellen. Von der Einbalsamierung zur Verbrennung, von den Beginnen der medizinischen Sektion zur Forensik, entsteht so ein neues Bild einer in dieser Beziehung oftmals nur schlecht verstandenen Gesellschaft, für die der Umgang mit ihren verstorbenen Mitgliedern ein wichtiger, alltäglicher Teil des Lebens gewesen ist.

The decline of the Napoleonic Empire were met by the closest imperial family around Napoleon with the safeguarding of assets, including collections, everyday objects but also archives. One of the most important Napoleonids, Eugène de Beauharnais, Napoleon’s adopted son and, as Viceroy, his governor in the Kingdom of Italy since 1805, began documenting and safeguarding his possessions as early as on his way into Bavarian exile in 1814. Eugène’s administrative and organizational skills, for which he had been trained by Napoleon during his time as viceroy and military officer, formed the basis for the large-scale local and cross-border movement of objects that took place mainly between 1814 and 1818. This is also a conclusion to the Europe-wide re-sorting and shipping of objects triggered by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period.

La rencontre entre l’artiste Ari Benjamin Meyers et le philosophe et musicologue Peter Szendy, accompagnée par une lecture du traducteur et dramaturge Jean Torrent, fait partie du séminaire « Comment exposer la polyphonie ? ». Organisé au DFK Paris par Mathilde Arnoux (directrice de recherche au DFK Paris) et Anne Zeitz (maître de conférences en Arts plastiques à l’Université Rennes 2), ce séminaire a fortement contribué à l’élaboration conceptuelle et théorique de l’exposition « Polyphon(e). Polyphonies visuelles et sonores / Mehrstimmigkeit in Bild und Ton ». Quatre premières séances avaient précédé l’inauguration de l’exposition à Gera (Museum für Angewandte Kunst et Kunstsammlung Gera – Orangerie, 2 juillet au 19 septembre 2021), puis quatre autres ont été organisées le temps de l’ouverture du deuxième volet de l’exposition à Saint-Denis (Musée d’art et d’histoire Paul Éluard, 20 mai au 7 novembre 2022). Cette dernière séance avec Ari Benjamin Meyers et Peter Szendy, dont les écrits n’ont cessé de nourrir nos questionnements au fil des rencontres, nous permet d’envisager une fin au cycle « Comment exposer la polyphonie ? », qui a démarré en mars 2021, sans pour autant clore nos réflexions.

Ari Benjamin Meyers a cheminé aux côtés du séminaire « Comment exposer la polyphonie ? » depuis le début, notamment à travers des présentations de projets performatifs comme Duet, montré dans l’exposition « Polyphon(e) », et La Musique n’est pas…, réalisé avec les étudiants de l’Université Rennes 2, puis une rencontre au musée de Saint-Denis autour de Forecast, œuvre théâtrale et musicale à grande échelle. Nous reviendrons dans cette séance sur la version filmée de Forecast (partie 1) qui explore les phénomènes météorologiques et le changement climatique et en fait le point de départ d’une méditation sur la prévisibilité et l’idée que l’humanité, avec son besoin de pronostic et de progrès, est un inventeur de l’avenir. Conçue comme un examen des crises contemporaines et de leur imprévisibilité, la pièce n’a pu être accomplie telle qu’elle avait été initialement conçue, interrompue par la pandémie en 2020. Avec deux actrices, sept musiciens et une équipe de machinistes de la Volksbühne de Berlin, Ari Benjamin Meyers a finalement réalisé une version filmée de la performance sous la forme d’une série de cinq courts métrages, produite en mars 2021. Depuis, le texte allemand de la première partie a été traduit en français par Jean Torrent et publié sur AOC et une version performée en anglais de la première partie avec un acteur et trois guitaristes sera présentée au MUDAM de Luxembourg en juillet et au Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein en octobre 2023. Nos dernières discussions autour de Forecast ont surtout porté sur la voix, en particulier celle de l’actrice qui lit le texte de la première partie, de manière urgente et essoufflée, luttant avec le son et le rythme des instruments qui l’accompagnent. Dans le dernier projet d’Ari Benjamin Meyers, la performance UNLESS dans le cadre de Paysages partagés, initiés par le Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne et Rimini Protokoll, sept artistes ont été invités à intervenir à l’extérieur, entre champs et forêts. Le tout dernier moment de cette production d’une journée est la partie finale de UNLESS intitulée « …for the Air » : les musiciens courent à toute allure vers le public, une fois arrivés à bout de souffle, ils commencent à interpréter la partition. En plus de regarder la partie 1 de Forecast, nous écouterons la lecture d’un extrait de la traduction française par Jean Torrent et discuterons de la relation entre les deux projets qui ont évolué, et évoluent toujours, de manière complémentaire.

Nous poursuivrons les échanges avec Peter Szendy, philosophe et musicologue, professeur de littérature comparée à Brown University (Providence, RI), qui dans ses recherches actuelles, elles aussi présentées sur AOC, interroge les possibilités d’un « souffle commun ». Il aborde le sujet de manière littéraire et philosophique, en explorant toute une série de textes qui parlent du souffle partagé et qui vont de Cicéron à Jacques Lacan en passant par Hermann Broch, Elias Canetti ou Frantz Fanon. Partant du sens enfoui du terme conspiration, il révèle les dimensions à la fois cosmologique et politique du fait de « respirer ensemble ». Le souffle offre à Szendy l’occasion de penser les vulnérabilités ensemble avec la finitude et d’ouvrir à une réflexion socio-politique sur l’essoufflement. Réciprocité et partage sont au cœur de son approche, déjà engagées dans ses précédentes recherches. Ses ouvrages, notamment Écoute. Une histoire de nos oreilles (2001), Sur écoute. Esthétique de l’espionnage (2007) et Pouvoirs de la lecture. De Platon au livre électronique (2022), prêtent une attention particulière aux fragilités, incertitudes et fluctuations qui participent des rapports entre destinateurs et destinataires de ces actes si discrets que sont l’écoute ou la lecture.

Last workshop of the seminar “Exhibiting Polyphony” with artist Ari Benjamin Meyers and philosopher and musicologist Peter Szendy

The encounter between artist Ari Benjamin Meyers and philosopher and musicologist Peter Szendy, with a reading out loud by translator and dramatist Jean Torrent, is part of the seminar “Exhibiting Polyphony”. Organised at the DFK Paris by Mathilde Arnoux (research director at the DFK Paris) and Anne Zeitz (lecturer in Visual Arts at Université Rennes 2), this seminar was part of the conceptual and theoretical formulation of the exhibition “Polyphon(e). Polyphonies visuelles et sonores / Mehrstimmigkeit in Bild und Ton”. Four workshops preceded the opening in Gera (Museum für Angewandte Kunst and Kunstsammlung Gera – Orangerie, 2 July to 19 September 2021). Four others have then been organised during the second part in Saint-Denis (Musée d’art et d’histoire Paul Éluard, 20 May to 7 November 2022). This last session with Ari Benjamin Meyers and Peter Szendy, whose writings have constantly accompanied our questioning throughout the seminars, allows us to envisage an end to the cycle “Exhibiting Polyphony”, which began in March 2021, without bringing our reflections to a standstill.

Ari Benjamin Meyers has been accompanying the seminar “Exhibiting Polyphony” since the beginning, having presented performative projects such as Duet, shown in the exhibition “Polyphon(e)”, and La Musique n’est pas…, realized with students of the university of Rennes, followed by a session around his large-scale music-theater work Forecast at the museum of Saint-Denis. In this session, we will return to a film version of Forecast (Part 1) and watch it again. The piece explores meteorological phenomena and climate change as the starting point for a meditation on predictability and the idea that humanity, with its need for progress and prognosis, is an inventor of the future. Conceived as an examination of contemporary crises and their inherent unpredictability, the piece could not be completed as originally planned, interrupted by the pandemic in 2020. With two actresses, seven musicians and a team of stagehands from the Berlin Volksbühne, Ari Benjamin Meyers finally produced a version of the performance as a series of five short films in March 2021. Since then, the German text of the first part has been translated to French by Jean Torrent and published on AOC and an English performance version of Part 1 with one actor and three guitarists will be presented at MUDAM in Luxembourg in July and in Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in October 2023. Our last discussions around Forecast focused mainly on the voice, particularly that of the actress who reads the text of the first part. She does so urgently and breathlessly, struggling with the sound and rhythm of the instruments accompanying her. In Ari Benjamin Meyers’ newest project, a performance entitled UNLESS within the framework of Shared Landscapes, initiated by Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne and Rimini Protokoll, seven artists were asked to create performances for the outdoors between fields and forests. The very last moment of the day-long production is the final part of UNLESS entitled “…for the Air” and involves the musicians running towards the audience at full speed, who only then, upon arrival and completely out of breath, start interpreting the score. Besides the recording of Forecast, we will listen to a reading of an extract of the French translation by Jean Torrent and discuss the ongoing dimension of the two projects that have been evolving, and still are, in a complementary way.

We will continue our exchanges with Peter Szendy, philosopher and musicologist, Professor of Comparative Literature and Humanities at Brown University, who in his current research questions the possibilities of a “common breath”, a reflexion which is presented on AOC as well. He addresses the topic in a literary and philosophical way, exploring a whole series of texts that refer to a shared breath and that go from Cicéron and Jacques Lacan to Hermann Broch, Elias Canetti and Frantz Fanon. Starting from the embedded meaning of the term conspiracy, he reveals both the cosmological and political dimensions of “breathing together”. Breathing offers Szendy the opportunity to think about vulnerabilities together with finitude and to open up a socio-political reflection on breathlessness. Reciprocity and sharing are at the heart of his approach, already engaged in his previous research. His published works as Listen. A History of Our Ears (2008), All Ears: The Aesthetics of Espionage (2016) and Pouvoirs de la lecture. De Platon au livre électronique (2022) pay particular attention to the fragilities, uncertainties and fluctuations that participate in the relationship between addressers and recipients during the fragile acts of listening or reading.

The daughters of Amine El Bacha (1932-2019), Paul Guiragossian (1926-1993) and Saloua Raouda Choucair (1916-2017) – leading artists of Lebanon’s art world – will talk about the responsibility of taking care of their parent’s legacy, what challenges they face in organizing an artist estate in Lebanon and what it means to curate a biography that is intrinsically linked to their own.

This is the final event of the Moving Biography Summer School that took place in June 2022, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.

About the speakers:

Mahita El Bacha Urieta 

A curator and cultural design and policy specialist working internationally for over 25 years, Mahita El Bacha Urieta has recently retrained as a psychotherapist and life coach, and runs her private practice out of Madrid, Spain. She is one of Lebanese artist Amine El Bacha’s three daughters, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Amine El Bacha Foundation, which is responsible for the management and promotion of the late artist’s estate.

Manuella Guiragossian

Born in Lebanon, Manuella Guiragossian  received her earliest training in her father’s studio, the renowned artist Paul Guiragossian. She held her first solo exhibition in Paris in 1989 and went on to graduate from the California Institute of the Arts in 2002 with a BFA in Film and Video, specializing in Character Animation. Manuella has exhibited her works globally for over three decades. After her father’s passing in 1993, she began researching and archiving his life and works. In 2011, she founded the Paul Guiragossian Foundation with her family, of which she has been the president ever since. The foundation aims to promote and preserve the legacy of Paul Guiragossian’s work through exhibitions and publications and collaborates with other cultural organizations and institutions worldwide to showcase Guiragossian’s contribution in the development of art in Lebanon and the Middle East.

Hala Schoukair

Having grown up in Beirut, Hala Schoukair went on to receive a master’s degree in Cinematographic Studies from the Sorbonne University in Paris in 1981. She lived in Beirut from 1983-1987, where she worked in film production and window dressing. Later, she moved to the United States and became a visual artist, with solo exhibitions in Beirut and group exhibitions in the United States, Europe, United Arab Emirates and Lebanon. Hala is the daughter of the pioneer abstract artist Saloua Raouda Choucair and chairs a foundation that commemorates her mother’s art and legacy.

In seiner klassischen Studie zur »Sprache der Geographen« (1964) entwarf François de Dainville ein detailreiches Panorama frühneuzeitlicher Karten: Begriffe, Zeichen und Farben bezogen sich dabei auf eine Fülle unterschiedlicher geographischer Gegenstandsbereiche, die sowohl Fragen der Astronomie, der physischen Geographie als auch der historischen Geographie umfassten. Doch so anregend die Studie für die genauere Kartenlektüre späterer Epochen erscheint, so auffällig ist zugleich, dass de Dainville epistemische Dimensionen kartographischen Wissens ausblendet. Der Vortrag rückt diese ins Zentrum, indem er die noch genauer zu umreißende Sprache der Kartographen mit Fragen nach dem epistemischen Status kartographischen Wissens verknüpft. Am Beispiel ausgewählter Karten des 19. Jahrhunderts wird so diskutiert, in welchem Umfang zeitgenössische Kartographien eine neue epistemische Qualität zukommt, die sich an Markierungen von Unsicherheit und Nicht-Wissen ablesen lässt. Dieser Ansatz rückt das 19. Jahrhundert als eine Epoche neuer Globalität in ein anderes Licht und schlägt vor, das Jahrhundert auch als eine Epoche der Unsicherheit zu verstehen, die sich deutlich in Karten artikulierte.

The 1960s and 1970s were the heyday of labour history, and not only for historians of Germany. There was a marked turning-away from both labour history and workers' history after 1980, due in part to new interest in the German and European bourgeoisies, in part to the "cultural turn" and other scholarly trends. Then came the collapse of the Soviet Union after 1991 and the decline of Marxist historiographies. In 2010, a forum of scholars acknowledged that "class," as an analytical category, had largely lost its appeal. But now we are more than ten years further on, and scholars have recently been telling us that histories of work, of labour movements, and of capitalism are all back "in." Are they really?

Certainly, the COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us that work and the concept of work are central to our existence and self-worth. And scholarship has not stood still since 1980. Histories of work have embraced the history of capitalism, class, race, ethnicity, religion, language, migration, and locality; of gender construction, the body, and emotions; of education, life-cycles, and generations. The study of labour movements has also revealed important connections between cultures of commemoration, memory studies, and the role of "citizen workers" in civil society. The time seems ripe for another stocktaking on these interrelated themes, bringing history into conversation with other disciplines.

Including the iconic figure of August Bebel provides focus in another way. Was the leader of Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) a worker, a craftsman, a manufacturer, a merchant, an entrepreneur, even perhaps a Bürger? Was he the embodiment of Social Democracy, as Lenin once claimed? Either way, the collapse of capitalist society that Bebel foresaw as early as the 1880s never occurred, and within a year of his death his legions were marching faithfully to the front for Kaiser and Fatherland. Karl Kautsky's assessment of Social Democracy was closer to the mark: the SPD was a revolutionary but not a revolution-making party.

While the focus of this conference falls on the pre-1914 period and on Central Europe, this conference presents contributions that consider transnational or global comparisons and suggest how historians of nineteenth-century social movements can speak to those studying or participating in more modern ones.

Bio:
Mostafa Minawi is associate professor of history at Cornell University. He holds an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and Management from McMaster University after which he worked for several years as a consultant in the banking industry before starting his obsession with Ottoman history, earning an MA from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in History and Islamic and Middle East Studies from NYU. His work focuses on the study of Ottoman imperialism in Africa and Southwest Asia, including the Ottoman metropole. His first book titled The Ottoman Scramble for Africa: Empire and Diplomacy in the Sahara and the Hijaz was published in English by Stanford University Press in 2016, and it has been translated to Turkish and Arabic. His latest book and subject of this talk is Losing Istanbul: Arab-Ottoman Imperialists and the End of Empire, came out in late 2022. In addition to teaching history, Minawi is the director of the Critical Ottoman and Post-Ottoman Studies (CO+POS) initiative at Cornell University.

Zahlreiche Projekte zur Geschichte Europas vom 5. bis zum 16. Jahrhundert zeugen vom aktuellen Interesse an den zeitgenössischen Bedingungen von Wissensproduktion und -vermittlung. Damit machen sie unbekannte Orte und Räume  ausfindig, weil diese die Geltung von Wissen bestimmen. So wird die Bischofsaula zum Hörsaal, das Kloster zum Innovationslabor und die königliche Kanzlei zum Ordnungsstifter: Es werden Wissensräume geschaffen, die es zu ergründen gilt. Das Online-Seminar Quo vadis öffnet einen deutsch-französischen Diskussionsraum für Doktoranden und Doktorandinnen wie für fortgeschrittene Masterstudierende, deren Projekte Methoden und Theorien dieser  Forschungszweige als analytische Zugänge anwenden. Auf Grundlage einer ausgewählten wissenschaftlichen Publikation soll die im Projekt angewandte Methode oder verfolgte Theorie vorgestellt werden, um damit einhergehende  Probleme im konkreten Arbeiten gemeinsam zu diskutieren und Lösungen zu finden. Ziel ist es, junge Nachwuchswissenschaftler und Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen miteinander in Kontakt zu bringen: In sieben Sitzungen stellen sie ihre Projekte sowie einen Schlüsseltext für ihre Untersuchung vor. Diese Texte werden den Teilnehmenden vorab zugesandt. Das Online-Seminar beschränkt sich nicht auf die historische Mediävistik, sondern profitiert von interdisziplinären Zugängen u. a. aus der  Digital History, Romanistik, Germanistik und Soziologie.

Alegria pública, alegria política / Joie publique, joie politique (Zurich, 36 min), le troisième et dernier film-essai sur la joie d’Eduardo Jorge de Oliveira, est issu d’un dialogue entre Suely Rolnik (São Paulo) et Georges Didi-Huberman (Paris). Ce dialogue est une rencontre qui a eu lieu sur la table de montage du film. Joie publique, joie politique se concentre sur la joie en tant qu’émotion qui se soulève elle-même et qui soulève quelqu’un. Le film cherche une forme intermédiaire d’écriture qui, dans son état d’essai, rassemble les thèmes les plus divers que la joie peut soulever, notamment dans sa dimension politique, qui est aussi micropolitique, pleine d’affection, et qui renvoie à un vocabulaire de passions politiques.

This workshop explores the history of attempts to influence human behavior through interventions in urban infrastructure in Europe, the United States, and beyond in the twentieth century. It seeks to understand how the built environment and architecture regulated life and behavior through choices in form, size, material, or color. The papers will focus on how psychologists, architects, designers, planners, geographers, sociologists, and ordinary people directed and continue to direct people’s behaviors and social relations. They aim also to create dialogue between scholars who work on the study of infrastructure in different times and places across the global twentieth century.

Der neunte Familienbericht der Bundesregierung von 2021 betreibt politisches Agenda-Setting. Er konstatiert eine »zunehmende Heterogenität« des Zusammenlebens. Damit reagiert er auf einen Wandel familiärer Lebensformen. In historischer Perspektive stellt sich jedoch die Frage, inwiefern wir es hier mit einer Zäsur in der Geschichte der Familie in Deutschland zu tun haben. Stellt die Ausweitung des Familienbegriffs auf Lebensformen jenseits der ehelich gebundenen Kleinfamilie einen Bruch mit vorherigen Lebensrealitäten von Menschen dar? Oder liegt der Bruch vielmehr darin, wie Politik und Gesellschaft auf diese Infragestellung seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert reagierten? Diese Fragen diskutiert der historische Vortrag und wirbt zugleich dafür, eine Geschichte der Elternschaft und Sorge interdisziplinär zu denken.

Transnational research plays an essential role in global knowledge production. It also fosters mutual understanding and trust among the countries involved. This is especially true for transnational research in the social sciences and humanities, which explicitly aims at bridging and combining different national perspectives on issues of shared interest.

The conference “Transnational Research in a Multipolar World” will discuss the impact of the growing geopolitical tensions on transnational research with a particular focus on “closing spaces”, i.e. the limitations to free scientific research in autocratic regimes. We also take a look at how national research organizations and universities have responded to these challenges. Taking the example of gerontology and gender studies, we then explore how research in the humanities and social sciences responds to societal challenges and how research, in turn, feeds back into society.

The second day of the conference will look at research on and in specific regions – Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific. Taking into account geopolitical shifts, it will explore common topics as well as new venues and formats of transnational research. The conference will end with a keynote speech on world history made in Japan, a field that has increasingly drawn public attention against the background of global history research and history activism in a multipolar world.

“Climate-related migration,” “disaster mobility,” and “climate refugees” have become salient topics in the last decade in both the political and scholarly realms. Most of the discourse looks to the future, with mass migrations expected in the wake of ever more severe climate change. These climate mobilities tend to be regarded as a novel phenomenon. Yet, they are not new: Although the scope of these mobilities has never been larger, environmental factors and disasters have played a role in the movement of people throughout history.

This lecture series explores this relation between human mobility and climate change and disaster from the early modern period to our own time. It charts various ways in which people in the Middle East, North America, and Asia have grappled with the need to move out of harm’s way, whether that harm was a sudden flood or a slow drought leading to famine. Sometimes, these people may only have had to relocate by several miles, while other times they had to traverse continents, but in their mobility, both they and the environments they came to inhabit (either permanently or in transit) were transformed. The lectures examine a wide range of mobilities that climate change and disaster have provoked and the economic, social, and cultural developments they sparked. They also draw attention to the immobilities caused by choice or specific mobility regimes, as well as their interactions with the mobilities of others. With the help of some historical perspectives and contemporary considerations, the lecture series aims to explore new ways of thinking about climate-related mobilities today and in the future.

Der Vortrag befasst sich mit der Prävalenz der Diagnose »Fieber« in der Atlantischen Welt der Jahrzehnte um 1800 – den Zeitgenossen zufolge der »gewöhnlichsten« und tödlichsten Krankheit der Zeit. Der Vortrag umreißt den historischen Fieberbegriff, der bis etwa 1830 noch eine Krankheit, nicht das Symptom verschiedener Erkrankungen, bedeutete, und rekonstruiert den medizinischen Diskurs der Zeit von der besonderen Relevanz des Fiebers. Abschließend stellt der Vortrag Hypothesen über mögliche Gründe für die Bedeutung von Fieberkrankheiten um 1800 auf, die in der Vernetzung der medizinischen Gelehrtenrepublik der Zeit ebenso wie einer Reihe epidemiologischer Faktoren liegen, etwa dem Rückgang »auffälligerer« Erkrankungen wie der Pest.

British culture has always been fascinated by the figure of the Jewess. This lecture will explore its roots in nineteenth-century theology, and its popularisation through literature. In contrast to the more well-known stereotypes of Fagin and Shylock, the virtuous Jewess was an emblem of the privileged status accorded to both women and Jews in Victorian Protestant culture and demonstrates that Jews could function not simply as an ‘other’ within modern cultures, but also, simultaneously, an ideal self.

Nadia Valman is Professor of Urban Literature at Queen Mary, University of London. She is the author of The Jewess in Nineteenth-Century British Literature (2007) and has co-edited several books on Jews and literary culture including Between the East End and East Africa: the ‘Jew’ in Edwardian Culture (2009), Nineteenth-Century Jewish Literature (2013) and British Jewish Women Writers (2014). She is currently Principal Investigator of an AHRC-funded research project, Making and Remaking the Jewish East End.

Zahlreiche Projekte zur Geschichte Europas vom 5. bis zum 16. Jahrhundert zeugen vom aktuellen Interesse an den zeitgenössischen Bedingungen von Wissensproduktion und -vermittlung. Damit machen sie unbekannte Orte und Räume  ausfindig, weil diese die Geltung von Wissen bestimmen. So wird die Bischofsaula zum Hörsaal, das Kloster zum Innovationslabor und die königliche Kanzlei zum Ordnungsstifter: Es werden Wissensräume geschaffen, die es zu ergründen gilt. Das Online-Seminar Quo vadis öffnet einen deutsch-französischen Diskussionsraum für Doktoranden und Doktorandinnen wie für fortgeschrittene Masterstudierende, deren Projekte Methoden und Theorien dieser  Forschungszweige als analytische Zugänge anwenden. Auf Grundlage einer ausgewählten wissenschaftlichen Publikation soll die im Projekt angewandte Methode oder verfolgte Theorie vorgestellt werden, um damit einhergehende  Probleme im konkreten Arbeiten gemeinsam zu diskutieren und Lösungen zu finden. Ziel ist es, junge Nachwuchswissenschaftler und Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen miteinander in Kontakt zu bringen: In sieben Sitzungen stellen sie ihre Projekte sowie einen Schlüsseltext für ihre Untersuchung vor. Diese Texte werden den Teilnehmenden vorab zugesandt. Das Online-Seminar beschränkt sich nicht auf die historische Mediävistik, sondern profitiert von interdisziplinären Zugängen u. a. aus der  Digital History, Romanistik, Germanistik und Soziologie.

During the First World War, German civilians were interned as ‘enemy aliens’ in British Empire locations around the world. The biggest internment camp was Knockaloe on the Isle of Man, holding 22,000 prisoners. British citizens, white and non-white, were interned in Ruhleben camp near Berlin as a retaliatory measure, bringing the global experience of internment back to the German home front as well. For civilian internees across the world, long periods of isolation caused mental health problems in the form of the ‘barbed wire disease’. Humanitarian support came from the Spanish and the Swiss governments, as well as the Red Cross. The exhibition focuses on these global themes, opening up new perspectives and formats for presenting the history of wartime internment. Alongside eighteen panels, a Virtual Reality Experience will give viewers an immersive experience of Fort Napier Camp in South Africa.
