T.C. Boyle’s eco-thriller Blue Skies published in 2023 paints a hauntingly familiar picture of a climate-ravaged future — one that feels eerily close to reality. The novel’s characters live in a constant state of tension, caught between encroaching wildfires in California and rising waters in Florida. As disaster closes in, they face an unavoidable truth: there’s nowhere left to go but away. Forced to abandon their homes, they join the growing tide of climate migrants, turning fiction into a reflection of our own uncertain future.

The World Bank’s 2021 Groundswell report highlights climate change as an increasingly powerful driver of migration (Clement et al.). It projects that by 2050, it could force 216 million people across six world regions to relocate within their own countries. While a significant number of people will be displaced in the Global South, it is also a matter that concerns the Global North. Nations and communities in the Global North are increasingly experiencing the impacts of — mostly internal — climate migration, i.e. the movement of people within a country's borders primarily due to sea-level rise. Unlike acute climate events such as hurricanes or wildfires, sea-level rise is a slow-moving, long-term process that gradually impacts coastal communities over decades. While it is chronic in nature, its effects — such as coastal erosion, frequent flooding, and saltwater intrusion — can lead to acute disasters when combined with extreme weather events like storm surges and hurricanes. Together, historically, gradual destruction and the one stemming from disaster scenarios have endangered the existence of many communities along the coastlines with no exception to the United States, as seen in the case of internal migration following Hurricane Katrina. Sweet et al. (2022) find that sea levels on the coasts of the 48 states spanning the conterminous U.S. are rising more rapidly than the global average. In consequence, over 20 million Americans could be forced to relocate in the coming decades, with more than 13 million facing permanent displacement due to sea-level rise by 2100, as highlighted in Matthew E. Hauer’s Nature article (2017). 

Thus, internal climate migration due to sea-level rise, is no longer a future scenario as imagined in climate fiction or scientific reports, but an already lived reality by low-lying coastal communities across the United States. For instance, Isle de Jean Charles in Louisiana, home to the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Tribe, has already lost over 98% of its land to rising waters and erosion forcing the community to abandon the place their ancestors had lived on for centuries (Jimenez-Damary et al. 2020). While rising sea levels are impacting all coastal regions from Virginia to Washington state, minority communities are often — and, historically speaking, were always — disproportionately affected. The erosion of roads, sewage systems, and buildings and other impacts are leading to costly repairs and economic decline and pose serious risks to human health. In Louisiana, for example, sea-level rise and higher temperatures are a serious threat to wetland fisheries, forcing many people to abandon their homes and livelihoods. 

This scenario has prompted urgent debates on whether to rebuild or retreat and relocate. In their policy report Beyond Rebuilding: Planning for Better Managed Retreat published by the the DC-based think tank “New America,” Robustelli et al. advocate for the urgency of “an ambitious plan to support millions of Americans to steadily relocate in a way that is financially feasible, community-led, and socioeconomically equitable” (2023). In their analyses, politicians and policy advisers do not necessarily speak of (internal climate) migration. Instead, they have adopted the terminology of “managed retreat” to refer to the abandonment of occupied land and the removal or relocation of population and/or infrastructure out of areas subject to repeated flooding, rising sea level, or other natural hazards (Siders et al. 2019). Even though managed retreat is “a new concept in scientific and policy discussions, flooding [, which has forced people living near coasts or rivers to relocate,] has been threatening U.S. communities throughout the history of the nation,” as geologist Nicholas Pinter reminds us (2021). Other countries in the Global North, particularly Western European nations led by the Netherlands, have begun to implement publicly funded programs managing strategic retreat, which include buy backs of homes in affected coastal areas and targeted relocation (Lepesant 2024). In the United States, however, culture wars and climate change denialism of the conservative right and its MAGA movement have complicated the matter as seen with the recent freezing of respective Federal funds or as in the case of Florida — one of the hardest hit states of coastal sea level rise — through implementing a “Don’t say Climate Change” bill and its governor refusing to publicly address the matter of managed retreat (Tampa Bay Times, February 17, 2025). 

Climate change and its effects — including discussions about migration and adaptation  — have, thus, many layers which have been studied from an interdisciplinary perspective. Understanding its complex causes, impacts, and solutions requires integrating insights from environmental science, urban planning, policy studies, sociology, history, and beyond. This conference brings together scholars from diverse disciplines to examine contemporary and historical cases of sea level rise and the need for managed retreat in the United States — and as a matter of comparison within the Global North — Western Europe. By bridging knowledge across disciplinary and geographical boundaries, we aim to explore how societies navigate climate-induced displacement and adaptation.

Freiheit zählt zu den zentralen politischen Leitbegriffen der Moderne. In der Ideengeschichte und der Geschichte des politischen Denkens wird Freiheit jedoch überwiegend als ein genuin westliches politisches oder philosophisches Konzept verstanden; ihre Rezeption außerhalb Europas gilt dabei häufig lediglich als nachgeordnete, abgeleitete Entwicklung der Moderne. Nun ist unbestreitbar, dass das Freiheitsverständnis osmanischer Intellektueller im 19. Jahrhundert einen tiefgreifenden Wandel erfuhr und hürriyet/hurriyya zu einem zentralen Begriff eines politischen Vokabulars wurde, das parallel zu Konstitutionalismus und revolutionären Bewegungen entstand. In diesem Vortrag wird jedoch argumentiert, dass es sich dabei keineswegs um einen bloß derivativen Diskurs handelte. Vielmehr stand der Wandel osmanischer Freiheitsvorstellungen im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert in engem Zusammenhang mit dem Aufkommen kapitalistischer Sozialpraktiken als Gegenstand intellektueller Reflexion bei osmanischen Autoren, die auf Türkisch und Arabisch schrieben. Ausgehend von der Beziehung zwischen hürriyet und osmanischen Übersetzungen politökonomischer Texte zeigt der Vortrag, dass die zunehmende Präsenz von Freiheit als Motiv osmanischer Wissensproduktion Einblicke in ein zentrales Paradox der Moderne eröffnet: die Gleichzeitigkeit bislang ungeahnter emanzipatorischer Möglichkeiten und neuartiger Formen von Unfreiheit, die durch kapitalistische Gesellschaftsverhältnisse hervorgebracht werden.

Ali M. Uğurlu ist Visiting Assistant Professor für Geschichte und nahost-Studien am Bard College. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf dem Verhältnis zwischen politischen Begriffen – ihrer Entstehung, Übersetzung und Neukonfiguration – und kapitalistischen gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozessen im späten Osmanischen Reich und im modernen Nahen Osten. Seine kürzlich an der Columbia University abgeschlossene Dissertation ist eine ideengeschichtliche Studie zur Freiheit und konzentriert sich auf Intellektuelle, die im Übergang von imperialer Transformation zu nationalstaatlicher Formierung (1860er–1910er Jahre) auf Osmanisch-Türkisch und Arabisch – einige auch zwischen beiden Sprachen – schrieben. Der untersuchte Zeitraum ist geprägt von einem grundlegenden Wandel osmanischer Freiheitsvorstellungen und einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit einem Kernparadox der Moderne: dem Kapitalismus als Träger sowohl neuer emanzipatorischer Potenziale als auch grenzenlosen Leids. Am Bard College lehrt Ali M. Uğurlu unter anderem zur osmanischen Geschichte, zur Geschichte des modernen Nahen Ostens, zu Islam und Säkularismus, zu Revolutionen sowie zu kapitalistischen Gesellschaftstransformationen im Nahen Osten und darüber hinaus.

The research grant consists of a monthly stipend of € 1,200 for the duration of usually ten to twelve months. Short term grants of up to 90 days may also be made available. Travel expenses of a journey to and from Turkey will be reimbursed. Start of the scholarship should be at the earliest March 1^st, 2026 and at latest September 15^th, 2026.

The Orient-Institut cannot guarantee regarding the issuance of residence permits by the Turkish authorities. For short-term fellowships of a duration of up to three months, applicants must ensure that they have not stayed as a tourist in Turkey during the 90 days preceding the commencement of the fellowship.

Prospective applicants are expected to hold an M.A. degree in a related academic discipline. As a rule, a complete application is to demonstrate the necessity of conducting research in Istanbul or Turkey at large. Good command of Turkish or another source language necessary for the proposed project is obligatory. As the Orient-Institut Istanbul aims at creating an open and supportive academic environment, grant holders are expected to attend colloquia and conferences organised by the institute and to give a presentation of their own research. Research stays outside Istanbul must be cleared with the institute’s director.

Der Wind bläst aus der falschen Richtung, der Weg ist versperrt oder der Proviant fehlt – jede Form der Mobilität stößt unweigerlich auf Hindernisse und Probleme, und das nicht erst in der Moderne. Wartezeiten, Verzögerungen und Umwege waren elementarer Bestandteil des Reisens auch im Mittelalter. Für die historische Forschung ist ›Warten‹ jedoch ein wenig erschlossenes Thema.
Wie können Wartezeiten für die Analyse vormoderner Mobilität fruchtbar gemacht werden? Der Vortrag skizziert Ansätze und Erkenntnismöglichkeiten und erörtert Beispiele aus dem späten Mittelalter.

Was the postwar economic miracle a result of the Japanese government’s industrial policy, or did it occur despite it? This question has led to a substantial amount of literature, beginning with early work that claimed a positive impact of government policy on economic growth. This perspective is commonly linked to Chalmers Johnson’s 1982 book, MITI and the Japanese Miracle. Later research has focused on three main themes: policy instruments, the relationship between business and government, and the effects of policy. Many scholars found that the policy instruments supposedly used to promote growth industries actually diverted resources away from them and toward declining ones. Researchers who studied business-government relations discovered that government officials were neither as forward-thinking nor wielded as much influence over private industry as was previously thought. Numerous studies on the effects of government policy on industrial growth have produced contradictory or inconclusive findings.

In this talk, I argue that one of the main instruments of industrial policy toward growth industries was the licensing system for technology imports. This system was a highly adaptable tool, used to implement a wide range of measures aimed at achieving various industrial policy goals. The government did not impose its policies on industry unilaterally. Instead, the licensing system created a platform for negotiating the details of policy measures, allowing stakeholders to align their interests. Regarding the impact, I focus on technology policy and find that the licensing system positively influenced the terms and conditions of technology imports. I contend that the government’s role in postwar industrial development was more that of a coordinator rather than of a “leader” or “guide.” This view is reflected in my description of the Japanese state as a coordination state, contrasting with Johnson’s well-known concept of the developmental state.

We invite you to join us in discussing the symphony of different voices, of dissonance and cacophony, the tone and timbre of narratives, but also the unspoken, the unvoiced, the silenced. We propose to look at various geographies and chronologies of wars and conflicts, each of which produces different narratives that merge, complement, or undermine one another. By studying other post-war experiences, we hope to gain more awareness to navigate the challenges that Ukrainian society will face.

This year's Symposium program will consist of various formats: panel discussions, Q&A sessions, networking, films, trainings, and informal opportunities to exchange experiences.

The program will grant up to two summer fellowships of up to 3,300 Euro each to graduate students in German History at North American Universities located along the West Coast (west of the Mississippi River and the western provinces of Canada). This funding will give doctoral candidates with a focus on German history the opportunity to work for four to six weeks in German archives and libraries to review material for their dissertation. In individual cases outstanding projects can also be funded, which are not primarily concerned with German History but require a research stay in German archives.

This preparatory research is intended to make it easier for doctoral candidates to write a detailed description of their project which in turn can improve their chances of success if they choose to apply for a longer-term research fellowship in Germany in the future. Questions about applying or about the fellowship program in general should be directed to Heike Friedman (friedman(at)ghi-dc.org).

Eligibility Requirements:

• Applicants should be enrolled in a graduate program at a university in a state or province along the North American West Coast (west of the Mississippi River and the western provinces of Canada) and have worked on their project for less than 2 years
• Adequate knowledge of the German language
• Existing or planned contacts with archives and libraries in Germany

This one-day workshop on the history of medieval Germany (broadly defined) offers an opportunity for researchers from Europe and the wider English-speaking world to meet at the German Historical Institute in London. Participants will be able to discuss their work in a relaxed and friendly setting and to learn more about each other’s research. 

Proposals for short papers of 10–15 minutes are invited from researchers at all career stages with an interest in any aspect of the history of medieval Germany. Participants are encouraged to present work in progress, highlight research questions and approaches, and point to yet unresolved challenges of their projects. Presentations will be followed by a discussion. 

Participation is free of charge and includes lunch and dinner. The GHIL and the GHS will also provide a contribution towards travel expenses. Accommodation costs cannot be reimbursed. Support is available for postgraduate and early career researchers: up to £150, for travel within the UK (excluding London) and up to €300 for an economy round trip from Europe. Please indicate your interest in travel support in your application.

Workshop, German Historical Institute Paris, May 28-May 29, 2026

It is indisputable that experiences of mobility and migration have been part of the reality of life for many women and girls – not only in recent history. The mobility of women, whether as daughters, wives, or widows, as workers, nuns, entrepreneurs, or activists, was associated not only with gender-specific expectations, but often also with specific experiences that varied depending on factors such as social and geographical origin, status, age, religious, ethnic, and family affiliation.

The planned workshop at the German Historical Institute in Paris picks up on this and asks how historical actors reflected on, interpreted, and communicated experiences of mobility that contradicted previous expectations. We want to engage in a trans-epochal dialogue and therefore invite contributions from the early modern period to contemporary history.

The history of gender-specific mobility, especially female mobility, has become an established topic of historical research over the past twenty years. In contrast to older assumptions, recent research has not only revealed the extensive extent of female mobility but has also highlighted the wide range of different experiences of women and girls. The spectrum ranges from female educational and marital mobility, to urban-rural migration of female servants and other forms of labor mobility, to mobility in the context of family migration or political activism, whether in local or cross-border settings. Recent work has mostly emphasized female agency and the opportunities and possibilities associated with mobility, such as securing a livelihood, social advancement, and self-determination. However, women's mobility often came with particular constraints, challenges, and disappointments that influenced their experiences and decision-making processes and, in turn, shaped future expectations and retrospective memories. Explicit forms of forced mobility (e.g., expulsion, flight, slavery) are not to be included here.

The tension that arises between individual and societal expectations and contradictory experiences will be explored in greater depth during the workshop. The expectations and experiences of mobile actors themselves will be considered, as well as interpretations and reflections by third parties (e.g., relatives, institutions, scholars, peers) on female mobility and its contradictions, as expressed in letters, diaries, memoirs, and travelogues, but also in public debates, the media, official writings, and tracts on female mobility. Accordingly, the workshop asks how historical actors interpreted discrepancies between expectations and experiences. The focus is therefore not on measuring the objective success or failure of mobility or migration policy, but on perceptions and attributions of meaning in the face of such experiences.

Recent studies on historical »failure« have shown how varied interpretations of disappointed expectations were. For example, they could be relativized as partial successes or important life experiences, denied by assigning blame, or openly presented as tales of woe or calls to action. The question of which of these interpretations actors chose in which contexts and with what intention takes into account the agency of the actors, on the one hand, and opens up new insights into the expectations and perceptions of female mobility, on the other.

The planned workshop invites historians and researchers from related disciplines (e.g., historical gender studies, literary studies, etc.) to jointly focus on disappointed expectations associated with women's mobility since the 17^th century.

Contributions are welcome on topics including but not limited to:

•    Gender roles and individual and societal expectations of female mobility in different contexts

•    Individual and collective interpretations of disappointing mobility experiences and their impact on decision-making processes

•  Effects of »failed« or »disappointing« female mobility on gender images (e.g., the immobile woman), gender relations, and women's scope for action

•  Media and administrative narratives about female mobility and disappointing mobility experiences

• Perceived factors of »failed« female mobility and their intersectional interrelationships

• The significance of family networks and family status on mobility experiences

• Methodological problems and challenges in researching female mobility experiences

A joint publication in English is planned. We therefore request only previously unpublished material.

Der heutige Abend widmet sich der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion des Buches Forging National Music on Both Sides of the Aegean in the 19th and 20th Centuries (2025) von Cüneyt Ersin Mıhcı. Die Studie untersucht, wie sich Musik im neunzehnten Jahrhundert in Griechenland und im späten Osmanischen Reich als Medium der Artikulation nationaler Identität und Zugehörigkeit entwickelte. Durch die Analyse kultureller und politischer Rahmenbedingungen, die musikalische Debatten und Schulgesänge prägten, zeigt das Buch, wie Komponist*innen und Intellektuelle nationale Musik im Kontext von Modernisierung und Nationenbildung dachten. Nach einem kurzen Einführungsvortrag des Autors zu Methodik und Forschungsansatz folgt eine Diskussion mit den Expert*innen Martin Greve und Evangelia Chaldæaki, die die Erkenntnisse des Buches über die Verflechtungsgeschichte von Musik, Nationalismus und Identität in Griechenland und dem Osmanischen Reich reflektieren.

Kurzbiografien der Referent*innen:

Cüneyt Ersin Mıhcı studierte Historische Musikwissenschaft an der Universität Heidelberg. In seiner Dissertation Forging National Music on Both Sides of the Aegean in the 19th and 20th Centuries untersuchte er die Rolle von Musik bei der Herausbildung nationaler Identitäten in Griechenland und im späten Osmanischen Reich. Er arbeitete als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am DFG-Projekt Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae und ist seit Februar 2024 Leiter des Musikologie-Forschungsbereichs am Orient-Institut Istanbul.

Evangelia Chaldæaki promovierte an der Nationalen und Kapodistrias-Universität Athen mit einer Arbeit über Volksmusik in türkischen und griechischen Musiksammlungen der späten Osmanischen Zeit. Sie forscht zu griechischer und türkischer Musik, Kultur und Folklore und ist aktive Musikerin und Chorleiterin. Derzeit ist sie Postdoktorandin und Lehrbeauftragte an der Universität Ioannina und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Orient-Institut Istanbul im DFG-Projekt Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae.

Martin Greve forscht seit über 30 Jahren zur Musik in der Türkei, besonders zu Musik von ethnischen und religiösen Minderheiten sowie zum Verhältnis von Musik und Migration. Er ist am Orient-Institut Istanbul und Orient-Institut Beirut tätig.

Der Vortrag „Das goldene Zeitalter des türkischen Humanismus: Georg Rohdes Aufenthalt in Ankara (1935–1949)” untersucht die intellektuelle und kulturhistorische Bedeutung des Aufenthalts des deutschen Altphilologen Georg Rohde (1899-1960) in Ankara zwischen 1935 und 1949. Rohde, der kurz nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten in die Türkei kam, gehörte zu den zentralen Akteuren beim Aufbau des neu gegründeten Instituts für Klassische Philologie an der Fakultät für Sprache sowie Geschichte und Geographie der Universität Ankara. Seine frühen Arbeiten standen im Einklang mit der kemalistischen Kulturpolitik, die auf die Aneignung der antiken Kulturen Anatoliens im Rahmen eines modernen nationalen Selbstverständnisses abzielte.

In der darauffolgenden Phase unter Präsident İsmet İnönü und dessen Bildungsminister Hasan Âli Yücel, in der die Ideologie des sogenannten türkischen Humanismus die staatlich gelenkte Kulturpolitik prägte, wurde Rohde zu einer zentralenFigur des akademischen und kulturellen Lebens. Seine Tätigkeit trug nicht nur zur Institutionalisierung der Altertumswissenschaften in der Türkei bei, sondern beeinflusste auch maßgeblich den zeitgenössischen Diskurs über Humanismus, Bildung und nationale Identität. Rohdes Rückkehr nach Deutschland 1949 fiel in eine politisch angespannte Übergangsphase, die den Beginn des Mehrparteiensystems in der Türkei einleitete.

Die in diesem Vortrag vorgestellte Studie basiert auf umfangreichen Archivrecherchen und bietet die erste systematische Untersuchung von Rohdes Wirken in der Türkei. Sie leistet damit einen Beitrag zur Erforschung des akademischen Exils deutschsprachiger Gelehrter in der Türkei ebenso wie zur Analyse der frührepublikanischen Kulturpolitik und ihrer intellektuellen Verflechtungen mit humanistischen Diskursen europäischen Ursprungs.

Der Vortrag findet in Kooperation des Club Teutonia mit dem Orient-Institut Istanbul statt. Die Vortragssprache ist Englisch.

Sena Yapar studierte Volkswirtschaftslehre an der Marmara-Universität in Istanbul und arbeitete anschließend als Kulturjournalistin bei der Tageszeitung Cumhuriyet sowie als Redakteurin der zweisprachigen Zeitschrift TABA/AmCham der Türkisch-Amerikanischen Handelskammer. Sie erwarb einen M.A. in Kulturwissenschaften an der İstanbul Bilgi Universität und einen weiteren M.A. in türkischer Literatur an der Bilkent Universität, wo sie auch als Lehrbeauftragte tätig war. Derzeit promoviert sie im Fach Turkologie an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der Kulturgeschichte und Kulturpolitik der frühen Republik mit besonderem Fokus auf die Schnittstellen von Modernität, kultureller Produktion und urbanem Raum.

Rape represents a re-occurring theme within Japanese women’s literature. Even the earliest works created by Japanese women tell of rape of women, although over time their stories have been usurped and reinterpreted as tales of seduction and eroticism. While the latter is the product of an androcentric worldview that shapes our perception of rape of women to this day, it has not been free of criticism or counter-concepts from Japanese women writers. Since the 1980s, as the discussion about sexual violence against women set off in Japan, Japanese women authors have been using their literary works to challenge those androcentric conceptualizations of rape and raped women by producing texts from a female rape survivor’s perspective. In doing so, they’ve been not only criticizing the often romanticized and eroticized depictions of raped women within literature by male authors, they’ve also been contributing to breaking the taboo surrounding the rape of women in mundane life, providing insight into what it means for a woman to experience and survive something as traumatizing as rape and how rape fundamentally affects their lives.
This presentation takes a close look at selected works written by contemporary Japanese women writers since the 1980s centring around the experience of rape by a female character within the story. It discusses how rape is conceptualized within the selected stories, how the rape trauma as such is depicted and how the diegetic surroundings respond to the rape of the female character. The discussed works will be compared with each other to demonstrate as to what extent there have been changes regarding how raped women are perceived within the diegetic Japanese society.

Marija Tomic is a doctoral candidate at the University of Vienna, Austria, specializing in Japanese women’s literature. She wrote her master’s thesis on the depiction of rape trauma in novels by contemporary Japanese literature written by women. Her other areas of focus include modern Japanese literature (kindai bungaku), cross-border literature (ekkyō bungaku), Japanese women’s history, gender relations and their representation in literature and film. Since October 2025 she has been a PhD student at the DIJ Tokyo.

In the early medieval period, we can observe the rise of ethnically defined legal pluralism. This meant that in the courts of the Frankish kingdom, Franks, Romans, Alamans, Bavarians, Burgundians, Lombards, and members of further ethnic groups had to be treated according to their respective laws. In contrast to recent scholarship, which has emphasized the fluidity of ethnic and other categories of distinction, the lecture proceeds from the observation that law in this period tended to simplify ethnic categories and make them as unambiguous as possible, because otherwise it was not possible to clarify the legal identity and status of an individual. On this basis, it will describe the rise of ethically defined legal pluralism, discuss some of the more theoretical and practical problems inherent in it, and analyse attempts to solve potential norm conflicts arising from ethically defined legal pluralism.

Stefan Esders studied history and Latin at Heidelberg University, the University of Freiburg, and the University of Oxford, and has been Professor of Late Antique and Early Medieval History at the Freie Universität Berlin since 2006. His current research concentrates on the ‘barbarian’ kingdoms of the post-Roman West, with a special focus on their legal and social history.

Das Deutsche Historische Institut Paris (DHIP) vergibt zweimal jährlich die Karl-Ferdinand-Werner-Fellowships. Gefördert werden können neben individuellen Archiv- und Bibliotheksforschungen in Paris und Umgebung auch Aufenthalte, die der konzentrierten Manuskriptarbeit mit Hilfe der gut ausgestatteten Institutsbibliothek dienen oder der Vertiefung von wissenschaftlichen Kontakten für die französisch-deutsche Wissenschaftskooperation (z. B. zur Konzeption von gemeinsamen Forschungsprojekten).

Stichdaten für Bewerbungen sind jeweils der 15. Februar (Aufenthalte im Sommer/Herbst des laufenden Jahres) und der 15. September (Aufenthalte in den ersten Monaten des Folgejahrs).

Die Dauer der geförderten Aufenthalte beträgt zwischen einer und vier Wochen. Die Fellows wohnen kostenlos in einem der Gästezimmer des DHIP, erhalten Anbindung an die Infrastruktur des Instituts sowie seine Bibliothek und können von den wissenschaftlichen Kontakten des DHIP profitieren.

Das Programm richtet sich insbesondere an Professorinnen und Professoren und an Angehörige des akademischen Mittelbaus (mit zumindest abgeschlossener Promotion) an deutschen Hochschulen, deren Vorhaben sich in die Arbeitsfelder des DHIP einfügen. Dozierende, die im universitären Alltag die Lasten von Lehre und Selbstverwaltung zu tragen haben, sollen zum Beispiel in der vorlesungsfreien Zeit während ihres kostenlosen Aufenthalts am DHIP ungestört ihre wissenschaftliche Arbeit verfolgen und von dessen Infrastruktur profitieren.

Andere Bewerberinnen und Bewerber mit einem förderungsfähigen wissenschaftlichen Anliegen können dann berücksichtigt werden, wenn die Kapazitäten des Programms nicht ausgeschöpft sind. Vertreterinnen und Vertreter historisch arbeitender Nachbarfächer können sich ebenfalls bewerben, wenn ihre Forschungsanliegen interdisziplinär ausgerichtet und für das DHIP relevant sind. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, die schon einmal KFW-Fellow waren, können sich um weitere Forschungsaufenthalte bewerben.

Die diesjährige Preisträgerin wurde von dem neuen Forschungszentrum Ukraine der MWS in Lviv nominiert. Leiterin Iryna Klymenko begründet die Nominierung: „Stefaniia Demchuck hat bemerkenswerte wissenschaftliche Leistungen erbracht. Ihre Forschungstätigkeit ist durch innovative Fragestellungen und eine ausgeprägte internationale Orientierung gekennzeichnet – Kriterien, die der Forschungspreis in besonderer Weise würdigt.“

Der Internationale Forschungspreis der Max Weber Stiftung ist mit 5.000 Euro dotiert und wird alle drei Jahre vergeben. Zusätzlich werden Übersetzungs- und Open-Access-Publikationskosten übernommen. Die Verleihung des Preises an Stefaniia Demchuck findet voraussichtlich im Frühjahr 2026 im Rahmen der feierlichen Eröffnung des Forschungszentrums Ukraine in Lviv statt.

Das Forschungszentrum Ukraine in Lviv wurde 2025 gegründet. Es beschäftigt sich mit der transnationalen Geschichte der Region, die durch die politischen Grenzen der heutigen Ukraine markiert ist. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf den Kommunikationsprozessen, durch die sich die Region seit der Frühen Neuzeit bis heute mit west- und mitteleuropäischen Akteuren und Institutionen verflochten sah.

Migration zwischen Europa und der Region Nahost und Nordafrika betrifft nicht nur Süd-Nord-Bewegungen. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg beispielsweise, flüchteten Europäerinnen und Europäer aus verschiedenen Gründen in diese Regionen. Wie wurden sie von Kolonialregimen und internationalen Organisationen, aber auch von nationalen Regierungen und der Lokalbevölkerung unterstützt? Als Europäer:innen haben sie einerseits einen priviligierten Status, andererseits befinden sie sich als Flüchtlinge in einer prekären Situation. Esther Möller leistet mit ihrem Vortrag einen Beitrag zur  Erforschung der komplexen Geschichte europäisch-arabischer Beziehungen während des Zweiten Weltkriegs.

The GHI Washington is part of the Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad, one of the leading agencies supporting German research in the humanities and social sciences abroad. The institute conducts research and promotes work in the fields of German/European and Jewish history, American and transatlantic history (North America and Latin America), and the history of migration and mobility. Currently, the institute is establishing a new research focus on “Empires and their Legacies.” In its role as an intermediary between researchers in Germany and North America, the GHI Washington has a broad international academic network.

Primary Tasks and Responsibilities

The advertised positions require active participation in the institute’s overall work. This includes editing the institute’s scholarly publications, organizing academic events, participating in the administration of the institute’s fellowship programs, and cultivating international academic networks.

Requirements

Applicants are expected to have earned a doctoral degree in modern or contemporary history with distinction; they should also be pursuing a new research project that will result in the publication of a Habilitation or an equivalent second book project. Ideally, this project should align with one of the current focal points of research at the GHI Washington. Applications relating to our new research focus “Empires and their Legacies” are particularly welcome.

Applicants should have a very good command of German and English. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding and in the organization of conferences is an asset.

The GHI Washington as an Employer

Both positions are initially limited to three years (qualification period according to WissZeitVG). There is the possibility of an extension. The place of employment is Washington, DC. If the applicant meets the criteria for a posting from Germany and fulfills the advertised position’s requirements, then remuneration will be in accordance with TVöD E13 (German Federal Government). Benefits for posted employees will be consistent with those of the Federal Civil Service and will include a foreign allowance (§53 BBesG), a purchasing-power adjustment (§55 BBesG), and a housing subsidy (§54 BBesG) to account for higher cost of living in Washington, DC. American citizens and other applicants with a valid U.S. work permit will be offered a local employment contract in accordance with the German Embassy in Washington, DC. Local employee salaries and benefits are based on Embassy guidelines; the starting salary range for Research Fellows is $10,050-10,352 per month, and benefits include (but are not limited to) health insurance, a 401(k) plan, and paid vacation/sick leave.

The New Industrial Revolution in the middle of 19^th century and its modern industry began to exploit many natural and synthetic resources, such as oil, gas, kerosene, or paraffin. The oil fields in the Absheron Peninsula and near Baku in Azerbaijan made this region very important for the growing industry since the middle of the 1860th. The Russian Empire was one of the most important markets for German, Finnish, and Swedish industries also as well as one of most important suppliers of raw materials for these nations.

Finnish, Swedish, and German engineers, traders, businessmen, companies, and agencies had their activities in Russia. Dozen foreign firms turned their attention to this oil region. The largest foreign companies in the South Caucasus were the Nobel Brothers involved in the oil business and the Siemens & Halske AG and later the Simens Brothers with copper mines. Finns and Swedes (citizens of Finland and Sweden) were the largest foreign diaspora in Baku. The third group were Germans. It was a unique expats’ community with their own culture, its own church, its own schools, its own cemeteries.

This workshop addresses several different aspects of the history of international community and family business in Georgia and Azerbaijan: the specifics of a non-regional family business in the periphery of the Russian Empire, the cultural history of business-expats in Caucasian cities, merchant communities, in expat-communities (including roles as ethnic/religious minority) and their role in Caucasian-European contacts. The task of the workshop is to discuss the everyday life and fates of Germans, Finns, and Swedes who moved to Azerbaijan and Georgia for various reasons and the role of archives and museums in preservation of the history of migration.

Der Wiederaufbau von Notre-Dame hat neue methodische Zugänge in der Kunstgeschichte katalysiert, die der Forschung der Kathedrale einen Erkenntnisgewinn versprechen. Der von der Deutsch-Französischen Hochschule geförderte Studienkurs zielt darauf ab, aktuelle Ansätze zur Erforschung der Kathedrale zu diskutieren und interdisziplinäre wie spezialisierte Fragestellungen zu fördern. Welche neuen Fragestellungen standen in den letzten 15 Jahren im Vordergrund? Wie haben sie unseren Blick auf die Kathedrale verändert?
Im Verlauf eines fünftägigen Programms sollen diese Fragen im deutsch-französischen Vergleich und im internationalen Kontext theoretisch reflektiert werden. 

Acht bis zehn Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen, Doktorand:innen- und fortgeschrittene Masterstudierende der Kunstgeschichte und deren verwandten Disziplinen (Denkmalpflege, Restaurierung, Bauforschung, mittelalterliche Geschichte, …) aus Deutschland, Frankreich und dem internationalen Ausland erhalten die Gelegenheit, im Rahmen von Workshops, öffentlichen Vorträgen, Besichtigungen vor Ort in Paris, Saint-Denis und Chartres von ausgewiesenen Spezialist:innen die aktuellen Forschungsfragen zu architektur- und kunsthistorischen Themen in den Blick zu nehmen. Dabei werden die verschiedenen Methoden der historischen, archäologischen, technischen, künstlerischen und denkmalpflegerischen Ansätze beleuchtet.

Gemeinsam mit Mittelalterhistoriker:innen, Kunsthistoriker:innen sowie Restaurator:innen und Naturwissenschaftler:innen werden im Rahmen von Workshops, Vorträgen und Begehungen in situ Fragen der Bau-, Ausstattungs- sowie Nutzungsgeschichte, Erhaltung und Konservierung diskutiert. Es sind Ortsgespräche und Besichtigungen der Kathedralen von Notre-Dame, Chartres sowie Saint-Denis geplant, die durch Besuche im Musée national du Moyen Âge - Thermes et hôtel de Cluny in Paris und in der Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie in Charenton ergänzt werden.

Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme am Studienkurs sind aktive Kenntnisse der deutschen oder der französischen Sprache und zumindest passive Kenntnisse der jeweils anderen Sprache (punktuell kann auch auf die englische Sprache zurückgegriffen werden) sowie die Präsentation von mindestens einem 15-minütigen Impulsreferats in deutscher oder französischer Sprache mit anschließender Diskussion vor Ort. Die Referatsthemen werden den Teilnehmer:innen zugeteilt. Darüber hinaus werden zwei Seminareinheiten stattfinden, die den Teilnehmer:innen die Vorstellung Ihres aktuellen Forschungsthemas (Masterarbeiten, Doktorarbeiten, …) im Themenbereich der Studienkurses ermöglichen.
Studierende und Doktorand:innen, die weder ein Stipendium in Paris erhalten noch Einkünfte aus einem Arbeitsverhältnis von mehr als 50 % beziehen, können einen Reisekostenzuschuss in Höhe von bis zu 150 € sowie einen weiteren Zuschuss zu den Übernachtungskosten in Höhe von bis zu 350 € beantragen. Der Antrag auf Zuschuss ist formlos und muss mit der Bewerbung eingereicht werden.

Die Studie zeichnet die Geschichte der alltäglichen Beziehungen zwischen griechisch-orthodoxen Christen und Muslimen im spätosmanischen Kappadokien nach. Basierend auf verschiedenen handschriftlichen und gedruckten Quellen der Zeit vor 1923 bietet die Publikation eine anthropologische Perspektive auf alltägliche interreligiöse Interaktionen. Untersucht werden Fragen wie die Identifikation und Definition von Gemeinschaften, Teilung und kollektive Nutzung von Raum und Ressourcen, Sprachgebrauch und Religiosität im Kontext von Konversionen sowie gemeinsamer Heiligtümer und Glaubensvorstellungen, um die alltägliche Realität einer multireligiösen ländlichen Gesellschaft zu beobachten, die mit dem Untergang des Osmanischen Reiches verschwand.

Die Buchpräsentation findet in Kooperation mit dem Institut français d’études anatoliennes (IFEA) und dem Orient-Institut Istanbul statt.

Aude Aylin de Tapia ist seit 2020 Juniorprofessorin für Turkologie im Fachbereich Orientalistik an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg i.Br. Nach Abschluss ihrer Dissertation 2016, die in gemeinsamer Betreuung zwischen der EHESS (Cetobac) und der Boğaziçi-Universität (Atatürk-Institut) entstand, arbeitete sie zunächst als Archivarin an der Boğaziçi-Universität und später als Postdoktorandin an der Universität Aix-Marseille, bevor sie nach Freiburg berufen wurde. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen vor allem auf christlichen Gemeinschaften und ihrem religiösen und kulturellen Erbe am Ende des Osmanischen Reiches und in der Türkei.

The Gerda Henkel Visiting Professorship is a co-operation between the German Historical Institute London (GHIL), the Department of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the Gerda Henkel Foundation, and the Gerda Henkel Professor’s home university.

The lecture examines the persistence of colonial imaginations in German history, arguing that 19th‑century knowledge and practices established enduring frameworks shaping also our current polarized political debates. 

The increasingly politicised public debates over colonial histories highlight social polarisation in our memory culture. In order to better understand this ongoing conflict, Anja Laukötter argues that we should take a historical look at the enduring persistence of colonial imaginations. Focusing on German history and using concrete examples, she shows how knowledge, thought patterns, experiences and practices in the nineteenth century already created the conditions and opportunities for the emergence of colonial imaginations, which could be invoked and updated later in history. She thus argues that this historical period was broader in its geographical and temporal scope than has previously been realised. 

Anja Laukötter has been a full professor of cultural history at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena since 2021. Previously she was a (senior) researcher at the research department “History of Emotions” at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development (2010-2021). Anja Laukötter earned her Ph.D. in 2006 and her habilitation in 2018 at the Humboldt University in Berlin. She has studied modern and contemporary history, political sciences and cultural anthropology in Cologne, New York City and Berlin. She has researched on the history of 19th and 20th Century European History, with focus on linkages between socio-political, cultural and history of science/knowledge perspectives. Within that framework she has focussed on the history of colonialism, its museums and collections as well as the history of the body, emotions and media (as photography, film, television). More recent she is interested in the history of truth and the history of imaginations in othering processes and democratic societies.

Die Ringvorlesung »Liberté – Positionen kunsthistorischer Frankreich­forschung« bietet vielfältige Einblicke in die aktuelle kunst­historische Frankreich­forschung. Unter dem Schlagwort der politischen, gesellschaft­lichen und künstlerischen Freiheit (»Liberté«) werden ästhetische sowie wissen­schaftliche Autonomie und Abhängigkeit mit Blick auf die kulturelle und künstlerische Entwicklung Frankreichs diskutiert. Die Vorlesungs­reihe versammelt aktuelle Forschungs­perspektiven von Nachwuchs­forscher:innen aus Frankreich, Österreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz, um aktuelle Tendenzen und methodische Neuerungen in die Diskussion einzubringen. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung werden somit nicht nur künstlerische Innovationen und kunst­historische Avant­garden vorgestellt, sondern es wird insbesondere diskutiert, wie sich neuere Perspektiven von tradierten Forschungs­ansätzen und Topoi »befreien« können, um eine viel­fältigere und vielleicht auch objektivere Betrachtung der französischen Kunst­geschichte zu ermöglichen. In der bewusst nicht diachron angelegten Ring­vorlesung werden spezifische Fall­studien und Themen beleuchtet, die von der mittel­alterlichen Kunst bis zur zeit­genössischen Medien­kunst reichen. How does the history of migration change when it relies on digital sources and methods? What new knowledge and what forms of inquiry, narration and documentation do these digital practices make possible? How can we identify and reduce bias while complying with the ethical and legal requirements that govern the collection, analysis and dissemination of data? These questions will be at the heart of the workshops, presentations and discussions of the 2026 summer school at the German Historical Institute in Paris.

Over the past few decades, the history of migration has broadened its horizons. Today it articulates shifts in scale from the micro to the global, takes social and cultural differentiations into account, and focuses on the infrastructures of mobility as well as the material, legal and affective conditions of “being on the move.” Greater attention is paid to the practices and everyday lives of migrants, often from a transnational perspective. This development goes hand in hand with increased use of large, multilingual corpora, whose access increasingly depends on digital tools. In addition to serial and statistical collections, sources include administrative, police or NGO archives, genealogical databases, documents from associations and religious organisations, legal sources, the press and other media, correspondence and private writings (including social media), as well as oral history interviews.

In this context, digital technologies are profoundly transforming research practices and have effects on the history of migration, a field long familiar with serial sources and open to computational tools. Large-scale digitisation and easier access to textual and visual corpora make new explorations possible. Analytically, computational approaches—text mining (e.g. topic modelling, sentiment analysis), network analysis and geographic information systems (GIS)—enable the exploration of large corpora and the identification of trends, recurrences and developments (by themes, periods, places, actors, etc.). For scholarly communication, maps, graphs and timelines offer readable ways to present, compare and discuss results. Oral history also benefits: remote collection, assisted transcription and indexing, archiving and online dissemination, as well as interactive forms of restitution that broaden audiences, open up new perspectives while calling for increased vigilance in matters of ethics, consent and data protection.

At the same time, we must take into account OCR/HTR errors, platform and selection biases—especially in the choice of sources to digitise and put online—which make some sources and voices more visible than others; gaps in provenance and coverage; and descriptive and dating inconsistencies that are common in often multilingual corpora. Hence there is a need for rigorous source criticism, transparent documentation of procedures and continuous contextualisation.

Objectives and thematic axes

The GHI summer school 2026 will examine what digital methods bring to the history of migration and how digitisation and computer-based processing influence results, interpretations and research pathways. It will also encourage the explicit discussion of limits and uncertainties. We invite presentations from advanced master’s students, as well as doctoral and postdoctoral researchers who wish to discuss ongoing projects and share a critical assessment of practices.

Proposals may address, in particular, the following themes:

• History of migration (all periods and regions): presentation of an ongoing project using digital methods in migration history, specifying the research questions, corpus/sources, methods and expected or obtained results.
• Theoretical perspectives on migration history: epistemological contributions of digital sources and traces of migration; effects on categories, scales of analysis and the writing of migration history.
• Critique of digital and ethical issues: relationships between research and the digital in migration history (datafication, algorithmic mediation and platform bias, digitisation and online dissemination policies, standards and interoperability, documentation and replicability); data protection, security and legal frameworks; the role of platforms and infrastructures of migrant communities, as well as those created for them.
• Data practices on migration: transforming migration corpora into databases (modelling, normalisation, alignments, documentation); critical reuse of existing databases; the contribution of these practices to substantive findings on migration.
• Oral history and digital narratives of migration: uses of born-digital sources, collection and archiving, interactive narratives and online exhibitions, associated ethical requirements.
• Computational methods and visualisations: network analysis, spatial analysis and GIS applied to mobilities (infrastructures, trajectories), text mining and image processing, sequence and temporality modelling, visualisations for exploration and argumentation, using mixed quantitative and qualitative approaches.

Other topics related to the theme of the summer school are also welcome.

Format
The summer school will take place from 22 to 26 June 2026 at the German Historical Institute (Paris). It will begin with an informal get-together on Monday evening, 22 June. On Tuesday morning, three hands-on workshops will be offered, applied to the participants’ corpora and fields. The other days will be devoted to short presentations by participants, each commented on by an expert and discussed collectively. The event will conclude on Friday, 26 June 2026, after lunch. Coffee breaks and lunch will be provided on site; partial funding may be considered for travel and accommodation costs (subject to funding currently being sought).

Despite the increasingly tangible effects of climate change in Japan the population continues to show comparatively low levels of climate concern. While the Japanese government has set ambitious carbon reduction targets, international observers have criticised the absence of concrete measures to achieve them. Domestic public responses, however, remain limited, and interest in the topic among the population appears to be waning. To explore the dynamics behind this trend, this DIJ/Sophia Sustainability Forum draws on original data from a nationwide survey conducted in September 2025. The speakers examine how climate change awareness, disinterest, and pro-environmental attitudes, behaviours, and perceived barriers are distributed across different population groups. Their analysis focuses on how climate emotions—such as fear, grief, guilt, and shame—relate to environmental attitudes and readiness to act. Hommerich and Neckel also consider the potential significance of climate nostalgia: the anticipation of losing culturally meaningful elements of everyday life, such as the distinct changing seasons, due to climate change. This event discusses how these emotional dimensions might help explain current patterns of engagement and detachment regarding the climate crisis in Japan.

Carola HOMMERICH is Professor at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Human Sciences, Sophia University, Tokyo. Her research focuses on the interrelation of subjective well-being and social status, as well as on the interlinkage of environmental attitudes and behaviour. Recent publications include Sustainable Societies in a Fragile World. Perspectives from Germany and Japan (Sophia University Press, 2024, edited with Masato Kimura).

Sighard NECKEL is Professor emeritus of Sociology at the University of Hamburg und Senior Permanent Fellow at the Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies “Futures of Sustainability”. His research covers social inequality, economic sociology, social theory and sociology of emotions, and more recently also social conflicts over sustainability. His latest book Katastrophenzeit. Die Gesellschaft im Klimawandel und die Fallstricke der Transformation will be published in January 2026.

Angesichts der Zunahme EU-kritischer Bewegungen, Krieg sowie antidemokratischer Tendenzen auf dem europäischen Kontinent erlangen konkurrierende Konzepte, Geschichten und Narrative von Europa im 21. Jahrhundert große Bedeutung. Dasselbe gilt für einen Dialog über widersprüchliche und geteilte historische Narrative, der erforderlich ist, wenn sich die sprichwörtliche Einigung in Vielfalt und die damit verbundenen demokratischen Werte auf dem europäischen Kontinent entfalten sollen. Diese Tagung geht von der Annahme aus, dass – soziale, politische, geschlechtsbezogene, ethnische oder religiöse – Vielfalt zwar oft als Ursache von Problemen dargestellt wird, jedoch für Europa in der Gegenwart und Zukunft auch ein Mittel sein kann, um der Erosion von Demokratie und gesellschaftlichem Zusammenhalt entgegenzuwirken. Die Auseinandersetzung mit sozial marginalisierten Positionen, subalternen Sichtweisen und historischen Peripherien hält demnach wichtige Impulse für eine kritische Reflexion und Neubetrachtung Europas bereit, weil sie etablierte Darstellungen um die Perspektiven »anderer Europas« und »anderer Europäerinnen und Europäer« ergänzt.

Diese Tagung bringt internationale Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen verschiedener Disziplinen zusammen, um Europa und seine Geschichte aus marginalisierten, peripheren und subalternen Perspektiven zu untersuchen. Sie fragt, inwieweit sich Konzepte, historische Darstellungen und Narrative von »Europa« verändern, wenn sie von Gruppen (neu) erzählt werden, die keinen oder wenig Zugang zu (politischer, wirtschaftlicher, sozialer) Macht haben bzw. soziale oder kulturelle Marginalisierung – z.B. aufgrund von Nationalität, Hautfarbe, Klasse, Geschlecht, Religion, Alter oder Sexualität – erfahren.

At the same time, the Japanese LDP-led government, seeing the risks and opportunities associated with the global AI boom and the global chip war, has ushered in a renaissance of its historical industrial policy, adopting an „economic security“ strategy and „new capitalism“-labelled industrial policy that places semiconductor manufacturing at the center of its endeavors.

Using an updated version of Rosecrance’s „trading state“ concept and theory-testing process tracing in two case studies, Steven Schwarz sheds light on the political economy behind Germany’s and Japan’s foreign policy-making in the context of the Russian war in Ukraine and the crisis in „Chimerica“. Separately, he analyzes the formulation and subsequent adoption of Japan’s new industrial policy in the semiconductor industry, applying the multiple-streams framework to examine the role of bureaucratic and economic actors in Japan’s industrial policy renaissance.

Steven Schwarz is a research associate at the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. His PhD project focuses on the role of domestic sectors and economic actors such as multinational corporations in the foreign-policy decision-making of Germany and Japan in international relations. His qualifications include a BA in history and political sciences from Technical University of Darmstadt, a Certificat d’Études Politiques from Institut d’études politiques de Lille (Sciences Po Lille), and a master’s degree in political sciences from University of Heidelberg. During his undergraduate studies at Technical University of Darmstadt, Schwarz spent an exchange semester at the department of international politics at Aberystwyth University in Wales.

Religious actors amid radical transformations in the Soviet Republics

Perestroika reconfigured the religious field across the USSR and beyond. Policy shifts under Gorbachev – on vivid display during the 1988 Millennium of the Baptism of Rus’ and later legally fixed in the 1990 Law on freedom of faith – opened space for religion while exposing deep divisions about its place in Soviet society and history. Equally important, but hitherto little explored is the fact that borders became more permeable, both toward the West and within the socialist bloc. This produced a multi-faceted space for exchange, transfer, transcultural impact, self-representation and competition. Transformations affected the religious field at every level: from the top of the socialist state to the grass-roots levels of society, but also horizontally, in the centers, regions and peripheries of the USSR and across the hitherto restrictive borders. Representatives of émigré churches re-entered the scene with distinct agendas; the official, but hitherto subdued, church (ROC) tested new forms of publicity and self-promotion at home and abroad; local authorities experimented with notions of “national” religion; Western missionaries pursued “mission on red territory;” new forms of religious tourism emerged, and churches acted on the moving diplomatic floor, assuming relevant roles in states and societies across the ‘Socialist Bloc’. Memory politics changed rapidly, with public narratives about victims of the Soviet regime and the creation of a new pantheon of martyrs. A swift expansion of publishing, seminaries, translations, student exchanges, missions and branch offices, humanitarian relief, and even the antiquities trade reshaped infrastructures. Besides, changing emigration rules – affecting Jews, ‘Russian Germans,’ and other groups – radically altered local communities within the disintegrating Soviet Union and created new trends and communities of former Soviet citizens worldwide.

All these phenomena occurred simultaneously and impacted each other in a transnational dimension. They require further investigation while existing research findings await a comprehensive discussion in a focused scientific setting. We want to offer such a setting in two interdisciplinary workshops, the first taking place at Nordost-Institut (IKGN e.V.) in Lüneburg in September 2026, the second at Max Weber Forum (Max Weber Network Eastern Europe), Helsinki, in April 2027.

The first workshop is designed to specifically address entanglements of religious relations, including religious PR, mobility, and networks of religious actors during perestroika and early transformation. This workshop concentrates on relations between the USSR and Germany, both in their bilateral dimensions and their embeddedness in broader, global structures, due to the participation of involved actors from other countries and continents. We look for evidence on brokers and gatekeepers, linking religious and other actors in different republics of the USSR with Germany, for example in the form of support projects and aid campaigns. We presume that there were actors from all segments of state and society – political and religious hierarchies, religious and administrative practitioners, but also ‘ordinary’ people, who became interested and engaged under the new political circumstances.

The second workshop shifts its focus more on developments within the republics of the USSR, especially regarding the transformations of law, religious relations across different Soviet republics, and cases of state–religion governance. One aim is to explore how the legal announcement of religious freedom was perceived and processed by the actors; how it was understood both in the sense of a new pressure to act, even a threat, but also as the hitherto unknown opportunity for self-realization and the emergence of “traditional religions” and “national churches”.

We welcome proposals that explore the entangled history of religion during perestroika from the perspectives of history, religious studies, and anthropology. We are especially interested in source-based case studies that uncover how people, texts, funds, artifacts, and norms moved across the “Iron Curtain” and circulated within the diverse and multifaceted Soviet Union. While work on Orthodox and Catholic contexts is welcome, we especially seek contributions on initiatives from EKD milieus, free evangelical communities, and the often-overlooked Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, and neo-pagan settings.

We are particularly interested in research that addresses:

• grassroots and regional (provincial) initiatives, especially in the republics of Central Asia and the Baltic states, as well as in the Far East, the Caucasus, and other regions;
• sensitivity to gender aspects, with special attention to hidden or overlooked women’s roles;
• religious or spiritually based humanitarian, educational, artistic, and ecological initiatives.

The German Historical Institute Washington and the BMW Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University are pleased to announce the 30th Transatlantic Doctoral Seminar in German History, which will take place at the GHI’s Pacific Office at the University of California in Berkeley on June 16-18, 2026. 

The seminar will bring together advanced doctoral students from Europe and North America to discuss their dissertation projects with one another and a small group of faculty mentors. The organizers welcome proposals from doctoral students working on any aspect of the history of German-speaking Central Europe since the eighteenth century or on topics in European, transnational, comparative or global history that have a significant German component. Doctoral students working in related fields – including art history, legal history, and the history of science – are also encouraged to apply. The discussions will be based on papers (in German or English) submitted six weeks in advance. The seminar will be conducted bilingually, in German and English; therefore, fluency in both languages is a prerequisite. Accommodations will be arranged and paid for by the conference organizers. In addition, a travel subsidy will be available for those who do not have travel funding from their home institution.

We are now accepting applications from doctoral students whose dissertations are at an advanced stage (that is, in the write-up rather than research stage) but who will be granted their degrees after June 2026. Applications should include: (1) vita, max. 2 pages; (2) dissertation project description, max. 1000 words; (3) provisional table of contents, indicating which chapters have been completed (max. 2 pages), (4) letter of reference from the major dissertation advisor (commenting on progress toward completion and fluency in English and German). Workshop at UC Berkeley | Convener: Simone M. Müller (University of Augsburg), Isabel Richter (German Historical Institute Washington, Pacific Office)

Protests against the siting of a toxic waste incinerator in Warren County, North Carolina, in 1982—and similar protests in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas – moved the intersection of racial discrimination and toxic exposure into the center of public attention (Murdock 2021). Since then, an increasing number of activists, researchers, and politicians have worked with the umbrella term environmental justice to investigate a wide range of topics. These include urban and industrial environments, labor conditions (Flanagan 2000; Pellow 2002, Carruthers 2008; Janos/ McKendry 2021; Rector 2023, Tau Lee 2023), the production of toxins, hazardous waste, and radioactive material (Malin 2015, Arndt 2020, Müller 2023), conservation of national parks and ecotourism (Wakild 2011; Honey 1999), the history of climate change (Morgan 2024), processes of privatizing resources and public goods (Bauer 1998; Shiva 2002; Robinson 2013), activism and environmental movements (Anthony 2002; Cairns 2021;), and people of color and environmental justice (Carneiro da Cunha 2000; Voyles 2015; Gilio-Whitaker 2019). Researchers in Central and South America have played a significant role in shaping the recent trend of analyzing decolonial environmental justice (Castro Gomez/Grosfoguel 2007; Escobar 2011; Álvarez/Coolsaet 2018; Rodriguez 2021). 

The workshop “Environments and Societies at the Crossroads” seeks to bring graduate students, postdocs, and senior scholars working on the history of social and environmental justice into conversation. By examining the historical connections between environments and social justice in nineteenth and twentieth-century Europe and the Americas, our workshop will explore the rise of modern environmentalism and the environmental justice movement including crucial topics and developments prior to the 1970s. Understanding social injustice and ecological decline as twin crises in the age of extractivism and industrialization, we invite historical contributions that explore the intricate relationship between societies and environments including topics such as debates on industrial pollution, labor rights or the distribution of wealth to projects of nature conservation, wildlife protection, and decolonization. 

We are particularly interested in contributions exploring the intersection of societies and environments at the crossroads, testing both their contestations as well as their alignments. We will use social practices, discourse and debates, and experiences in environmental and social history as a lens to reflect on a variety of methodologies, historical strategies, places, and spaces in the Americas and Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as arenas to negotiate questions of justice, including topics such as:

• Case studies that illuminate how justice is defined in this context. Who defines, and which lines of intellectual thought are considered ‘just’?
• Which terms and practices existed prior to the late twentieth-century environmental justice movement?
• How has the relationship between social and environmental justice been negotiated?
• How are distributional justice of environmental burdens and social burdens debated, i.e., who is paying for the damage, and who is being held responsible for it?

The in-person workshop will be held in English and will be hosted by the GHI Pacific Office at UC Berkeley. During the workshop we will discuss pre-circulated papers limited to 5000 words. Proposals, which should include a paper title, an abstract of no more than 250 words, a short CV, and contact information (address, phone, email), must be submitted online in a single pdf (the file name should be the last name of the applicant) by January 16 , 2026.

Secrétaire d’Auguste Rodin, il a lui-même dessiné durant sa jeunesse, puis à l’âge adulte. Son réseau de sociabilité, résolument cosmopolite, le montre en phase avec l’art de son temps. Son séjour à Prague lui permet de nouer des contacts durables avec de nombreux artistes comme le peintre et graphiste Emil Orlik qui compte parmi ses principaux amis. Il étudie la peinture de la Renaissance italienne avec l’architecte munichois August Endell en 1897. Heinrich Vogeler l’invite à Worpswede, où il rencontre entre autres Otto Modersohn, Paula Becker, et sa future épouse Clara Westhoff, qui l’introduit dans la sphère artistique parisienne au tournant du siècle. En contact étroit avec le peintre suédois Ernst Norlind, il admire aussi les peintures du symboliste danois Vilhelm Hammershøi. Avec Mathilde Vollmoeller, il réalise un véritable pèlerinage au Salon d’automne à Paris, en 1907, pour la rétrospective de l’œuvre de Paul Cézanne. Hedwig Jaenichen-Woermann et de nombreuses autres femmes artistes appartiennent à son cercle restreint d’amis. Le fonds acquis par les Deutsches Literaturarchiv à Marbach en décembre 2022 contient de nombreuses correspondances et des carnets de Rilke, inconnus jusqu’alors. Avec les fonds d’archives conservés notamment au musée Rodin à Paris, aux Archives littéraires suisses à Berne et à la Fondation Martin Bodmer à Genève, il montre à quel point Rilke a influencé le développement de l’esthétique moderne.

À l’occasion des cent-cinquante ans de sa naissance, puis du centenaire de sa mort en 2026, qui sera célébré par l’exposition « Rodin selon Rilke » à la Fondation Pierre Gianadda à Martigny (Suisse), cette journée d’étude convie des spécialistes internationaux à réévaluer les liens de Rainer Maria Rilke avec les arts visuels, et à s’interroger sur le rôle du poète dans l’émergence d’une esthétique particulièrement moderne.

In seiner bekannten Beschreibung der Stadt Wien aus den 1450er-Jahren geht Enea Silvio Piccolomini, prominenter Geistlicher, Geheimschreiber und Rat König/Kaiser Friedrichs III. und späterer Papst Pius II. auch auf das soziale Leben der Wiener Bürgerinnen und Bürger ein. Er beschreibt – aus klerikaler Perspektive äußerst kritisch – die Wiener Heirats- und Vererbungspraxis in einer Weise, die wir heute als serielle Monogamie mit dem Effekt von Patchworkfamilien bezeichnen würden. Christina Lutter setzt diesen Befund mit den Forschungsergebnissen zu pragmatischer Schriftlichkeit in Beziehung: Welche Informationen vermitteln größere Datenmengen zu Eheverhalten und verwandtschaftlichen Beziehungen? Welche Bedeutung hatten sie für das soziale Gefüge der Stadt? In diesem Vortrag stellt Christina Lutter ihr Projekt »Stadt und Gemeinschaft. Soziale Gruppen im mittelalterlichen Wien« vor.

Christina Lutter ist Professorin für Österreichische Geschichte und Dekanin der Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Wien.

This talk focuses on one of the central paradoxes of industrial modernity: the attempt to master nature using bodies that are themselves part of it. In the late imperial Donbas, the state and industrialists sought to make rock ‘go into service’ – to move machines, power industry, and strengthen imperial might. Yet both rock and body refused to obey. The very seams miners sought to master instead bent their flesh and filled it with dust. Their exhausted bodies disrupted corporate plans, just as unpredictable geology undermined the rational designs of capital and state. Drawing on visual, literary, and statistical sources, the paper presents industrializing nature as a process of co-creation: one where rock shaped flesh as much as flesh cut rock.

Volodymyr Kulikov is Lecturer in Ukrainian history at University College London. His research focuses on  the business and economic history of Eastern Europe, particularly industrialization, natural resource extraction, and business organizations in Ukraine from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century.

Molly Brunson is Associate Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Yale University. Her research interests include 19th-century Russian literature, visual arts, and material culture. She is currently working on a book project The Underground: Mining and Matter in Russian and Soviet Culture.

Triumphs and Laments: Uses and Pitfalls of Rome’s Imaginary in the 21st Century

There are few cities in the West that can boast as great a wealth of landmarks, images, and narratives related to their history and identity as Rome. As a whole, this urban imaginary constitutes a ‘myth of Rome’, or romanità, that implies claims to uniqueness, universality, and eternity. Starting with some examples of how elements of romanità are currently used in the context of an increasingly globalized real estate market and international tourist and consumer economy, the lecture discusses how commercial ‘branding’ in and of the ‘Eternal City’ interferes with deeper strata of ideas of power and identity, materializing in an urban landscape shaped after 1870 by the Italian nation state and particularly the Fascist regime. It then explores some political implications of this process.

Martin Baumeister held the Chair in Contemporary European History at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität of Munich from 2003 to 2017. Until 2024 he was the director of the German Historical Institute in Rome. He has published widely on the history of contemporary Southern Europe and the Mediterranean with a focus on Italy and Spain.

Berlin: The Modern Rome

The city of Berlin was all too often at the centre of events in the 20th century. Berlin was a monarchical, a democratic, a fascist, and a socialist capital. It was the place where two world wars were launched, which then returned to the city with great force. Berlin saw the Cold War reach its peak, as well as its symbolic end. The city was at the centre of world history, just as Rome had been two thousand years earlier. In his lecture, Hanno Hochmuth will explain why Berlin has often been considered the modern Rome. He will approach the city's contemporary history in a topographical and photographic way.

Hanno Hochmuth is a historian at the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam (ZZF) and lecturer in public history at the Freie Universität Berlin. He co-curated the exhibition East Berlin: Half a Capital for the Stadtmuseum Berlin. His latest book, Berlin: Das Rom der Zeitgeschichte, was published in 2024.

Launched in 2024, the first volumes have attracted considerable attention from the international academic community and are now available in paperback edition.

Our understanding of “transnational histories” is informed by approaches such as the new imperial histories, translocal histories, or global histories. It transcends the bilateral concepts of relational history or histoire croisée. This series presents interwoven histories that include diverse ethnicities, religions, cultures, and social classes.

We seek original manuscripts that analyze the mobilities and shifts (of borders, people, or concepts) characteristic of Polish history. We expect authors to contextualize their studies within broader historical developments beyond Polish territories and to examine the complexities and entanglements of Poland’s past as the norm rather than as the exception.

We welcome studies addressing the following topics:

• social and spatial migrations;
• cultural and intellectual transfers;
• social and economic changes;
• ethnic, linguistic, or religious interrelationships;
• environmental and natural histories (especially in borderlands).

We are open to other innovative research approaches in terms of topics, methods, and sources.

Looking back eight decades after the end of the Second World War, it becomes clear that from the moment their country was occupied by the Allied Powers, Germans had no way of evading their responsibility for the crimes of the Nazi era. However, in the Soviet Zone (and later in the German Democratic Republic), a doctrinal anti-fascism soon prevailed, while in the Western Zones (and later in the Federal Republic), the path to a self-critical confrontation with the past was taken: a decades-long, arduous process marked by social learning successes, but also by setbacks and scandals. Historian Norbert Frei provides an overview of how Germans have dealt with their Nazi history and analyzes the current state of memory culture in a reunified Germany. Former diplomat Yoshinori Katori will offer a comparative perspective on memory culture in Japan with a focus on current issues of historical reconciliation between Japan and South Korea. 

Norbert Frei is Emeritus Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena and the author of numerous books, including the standard works National Socialist Rule in Germany. The Führer State 1933-1945 (Blackwell, Oxford 1993) and Adenauer’s Germany and the Nazi Past. The Politics of Amnesty and Integration (Columbia University Press, New York 2002). His most recent books are the essay collection Einreden. Zu Zeitgeschichte und Zeitgenossenschaft (Wallstein, Göttingen 2025) and the biography Konrad Adenauer. Kanzler nach der Katastrophe (C.H. Beck, Munich 2025).

Yoshinori Katori is the President of Japan Korea Cultural Foundation, Japan-Austria Association, and President of Lee Soo-hyun Asia Scholarship Foundation. After graduation from the Faculty of Economics of Hitotsubashi University, he entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in 1973. He served in the Embassy of Japan in Bonn, in Munich as Consul General, as the deputy chief of mission of the Embassy in Seoul, and as Ambassador in Israel and in Indonesia. He retired from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2014. His publications include a book on the German Unification titled Kami no Manto ga Hirugaeru Toki (Random House Japan, 2010) and Higashi Ajia no Heiwa to Han-ei ni mukete (Towards Peace and Prosperity in East Asia) published by Kamakura Syunjyu Publishing in 2020.

Solche Praktiken der Herabwürdigung, die unter dem Fachterminus Invektivität zusammengefasst werden, stellen einen essenziellen Bestandteil sozialer, politischer und kultureller Gruppenbildung dar. Denn kollektive Identitäten entstehen vor allem durch Abgrenzungen nach außen. Besondere Bedeutung erlangte die Invektivität im Kontext der humanistischen Text- und Bildproduktionen des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts, die das gemeinsame Feindbild stets reproduzierten und dadurch aufrechterhielten. Das dies nicht nur südlich der Alpen der Fall war, möchte die kommende Tagung veranschaulichen. Im Fokus der Beiträge stehen dabei die transalpinen Verflechtungen invektiver Strategien, die sowohl von italienischen als auch deutschen Humanisten getragen wurden.

Liliane Höppe, University of Vienna/DIJ Tokyo

The Japanese author Shimao Toshio (1917-1986) exemplifies the complex interaction between cultural production and postwar debates on culture and identity in Japan. In his Southern Island essays, Shimao explores the cultures of Japan and the Ryūkyū Islands while highlighting peripheral regions as integral components of Japanese culture. These writings drew the attention of post-war intellectuals like Okamoto Keitoku and Arakawa Akira, linking Shimao’s texts with the political discussions on Okinawan culture and the anti-reversion discourse of the late 1960s and early 1970s. At the same time, Shimao’s writings were criticized for stereotypical and essentialist depictions of Okinawa that seemed to reinforce Japan’s claim over the Ryūkyū Islands, leading to divergent readings of his texts.

My dissertation examines Shimao’s conception of culture and identity—both on the Japanese mainland and in the Ryūkyū Islands—within the broader postwar discourse of cultural homogeneity. I will present the current state of my project and preliminary findings from my dissertation focusing not only on individual perspectives but also on broader processes of (re)conceptualizing Japanese culture and identity in the postwar decades. Combining computer-assisted quantitative analysis using KH Coder with qualitative text analysis, my research offers a data-driven perspective that can unravel ambivalent narrative and examine ideological nuances on a micro as well as macro level.  

Liliane Höppe is a doctoral candidate at the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna, specializing in cultural studies. During her master’s degree in Japanese Studies at the University of Vienna, she focused on Okinawa Studies and the discourse surrounding Shimao Toshio’s concept of Yaponeshia. She previously conducted research in Nagoya and at the Hosei Institute for Okinawan Studies from October 2023 to March 2024 as part of the Hosei University International Fund (HIF) Foreign Scholars Fellowship. Since September 2025, Liliane has been a PhD student at the DIJ Tokyo.

November 825 von den karolingischen Herrschern Ludwig dem Frommen und Lothar einberufen wurde, um über die Rolle von Bildern im Christentum zu beraten. Ausgewiesene internationale Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler sowie junge Forschende werden die Relevanz dieser Versammlung für die Kunstgeschichte, die Kirche und die religiösen Praktiken im Kontext ihrer politischen, gesellschaftlichen und institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen während des Frühmittelalters diskutieren.

The lecture will first address the significance of epistemic inequalities in the Global South and work out why these are often prerequisites for the persistence of durable social inequalities. It will then analyse the International Labour Organization (ILO) and its treatment of colonial, non-white workers in the 1920s as an example of the consequences of epistemic inequalities. The ILO, founded in 1919, deliberately excluded black experts from its discussions of ‘native labour’, relying instead on European experts with long imperial careers. These experts were generally influenced by racist prejudices against indigenous workers. They greatly affected the ILO's policies on colonial and forced labour before the Second World War.

Ulrike Lindner is Professor of Modern History at the University of Cologne. Her research interests lie in colonial and global history. She has worked on the comparative history of European empires, postcolonial questions, gender and empire, and issues of colonial and indentured labour. Recent publications include a special issue on The Production and Reproduction of Social Inequalities: Perspectives from the Global South (co-edited with Michaela Pelican and M. The mobility fellowships support self-chosen innovative research projects with links to one of the module themes of the research node. They are granted for research stays from one to two months. We especially encourage stays that involve joint activities with researchers at the host institutions, such as workshops, publications etc. Fellows are expected to contribute to one of the module blogs, which will be set up on the MWS blog platform (https://mws.hypotheses.org) or write a research note based on the research conducted during their stay.

This call for applications aims at strengthening and expanding networks within and beyond the research node and invites applications for research stays of one to two months during the time period between April 2026 and October 2026. All of the partner institutions in the research hub (ARI, DIJ Tokyo, GHI London, MWF Delhi, GHI Paris, GHI Washington, IAAS HU Berlin) are possible destinations for a research stay.

The mobility fellowship covers the travel costs and a daily stipend for living expenses abroad, the amount depends on the chosen location. Details can be found in the fellowship guidelines.

Mobility fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis. Applications are to be submitted electronically through the online platform. They need to include a CV, a description of the research project, planned dates, the names of possible collaborating partners at the host institution and one letter of reference.

Die Ringvorlesung »Liberté – Positionen kunsthistorischer Frankreich­forschung« bietet vielfältige Einblicke in die aktuelle kunst­historische Frankreich­forschung. Unter dem Schlagwort der politischen, gesellschaft­lichen und künstlerischen Freiheit (»Liberté«) werden ästhetische sowie wissen­schaftliche Autonomie und Abhängigkeit mit Blick auf die kulturelle und künstlerische Entwicklung Frankreichs diskutiert. Die Vorlesungs­reihe versammelt aktuelle Forschungs­perspektiven von Nachwuchs­forscher:innen aus Frankreich, Österreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz, um aktuelle Tendenzen und methodische Neuerungen in die Diskussion einzubringen. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung werden somit nicht nur künstlerische Innovationen und kunst­historische Avant­garden vorgestellt, sondern es wird insbesondere diskutiert, wie sich neuere Perspektiven von tradierten Forschungs­ansätzen und Topoi »befreien« können, um eine viel­fältigere und vielleicht auch objektivere Betrachtung der französischen Kunst­geschichte zu ermöglichen. In der bewusst nicht diachron angelegten Ring­vorlesung werden spezifische Fall­studien und Themen beleuchtet, die von der mittel­alterlichen Kunst bis zur zeit­genössischen Medien­kunst reichen. Neben monographischen Studien werden insbesondere Themen wie soziale und politische Umbrüche, die Rezeption französischer Kunst sowie die Wechsel­wirkungen zwischen lokaler und globaler Kunst­geschichte behandelt.

Sie unterstützt individuelle Forschungsprojekte und zugleich den Aufbau zukunftsfähiger Strukturen in einem Europa, das sich wissenschaftlich und politisch gegenwärtig neu orientiert.“

Das neu geschaffene Ukraine-Fellowship richtet sich an herausragende Historikerinnen und Historiker sowie Sozialwissenschaftlerinnen und Sozialwissenschaftler mit dem Schwerpunkt Ostmitteleuropa. Jährlich erhalten bis zu zwei Fellows die Möglichkeit zu einem Forschungsaufenthalt in Deutschland oder der Ukraine. Gefördert werden sowohl individuelle Archiv- und Bibliotheksforschungen in Deutschland und in der Ukraine, als auch Aufenthalte, die der Entwicklung von Forschungsprojekten oder der konzentrierten Manuskriptarbeit dienen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der Vertiefung wissenschaftlicher Kontakte, um die Zusammenarbeit zwischen ukrainischen und deutschen Forschungseinrichtungen nachhaltig zu stärken.

Mit der Einrichtung einer neuen Institution in der Ukraine setzt die Max Weber Stiftung ihre Neuausrichtung in der Region seit Beginn des russischen Angriffskriegs gegen die Ukraine fort. Wie alle MWS-Institute dient sie dem wissenschaftlichen Austausch, der Förderung des Nachwuchses und dem Verständnis zwischen Deutschland und dem Gastgeberland. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf den Kommunikationsprozessen, durch die sich die Region, die durch die politischen Grenzen der heutigen Ukraine markiert ist, seit der Frühen Neuzeit bis heute mit west- und mitteleuropäischen Akteuren und Institutionen verflochten sah.

In fundamental ways, colonial empires were all about mobility. The functioning of the imperial military and administrative apparatus, the production of colonial knowledge, the economic extraction of local resources, the export of colonial commodities were all based on relentless movement and circulation. This circulation, in turn, relied heavily on the use of various mobility technologies as well as on the creation of mobility infrastructures. It also crucially depended on the spatial movement of segments of the colonized population and/or external labour forces, clerks and military personnel, scientific experts imported from the imperial metropole or other world regions. At the same time, however, imperial formations were at pains to restrict or suppress mobility. Thus, the ideal colonial subject was usually imagined as being sedentary and immobile, whereas subaltern mobilities’ in general and the movements of potentially ‘dangerous’ population groups (such as nomads, ‘criminal tribes’, religious mendicants, diasporic anti-colonialists etc.) were seen as suspicious and in need of close monitoring.

In the spirit of the gd:c’s double emphasis on connectivity and the absence thereof, this workshop wants to bring together scholars of history and neighbouring disciplines that provide fresh and original perspectives on mobilities and immobilities created by/in the British, Dutch, American, Spanish, Portuguese and French colonial empires in South and Southeast Asia (and their respective global entanglements). The temporal focus may also be extended to the early postcolonial states that followed their collapse. While the ambiguities and tensions between forms of mobility and immobility and their relation to power may serve as a leitmotif, the focus of the individual contributions can be on the material, social, cultural, economic and political impact of particular transport technologies (steamships, railways, automobiles bicycles, tongas etc.) and the basic infrastructures (railway tracks, roads, docks) they required, as well on the movement of Käte Hamburger Research Centre global dis:connect certain groups of historical actors on both sides − and beyond − the colonial divide (soldiers, sailors, scientists, ‘peripatetic revolutionaries’, tourists and ‘globetrotters’, etc.) and the measures to control and check their mobility (passports, border controls, creation of surveillance networks). Another area of interest lies in the literary and artistic representation of various mobility experiences in travelogues, guidebooks, novels or films.

The Käte Hamburger Research Centre global dis:connect funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) in Germany approaches globalisation through the lens of dis:connectivity. The term dis:connection emphasises the dynamic interrelationship between global integration, disintegration and (absent) connections. Both conveners are currently fellows at the Käte Hamburger Research Centre global dis:connect in Munich.

The Delhi-based Merian – Tagore International Centre of Advanced Studies ‘Metamorphoses of the Political’ (ICAS:MP) is one of five Maria Sibylla Merian Centres funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). This year's annual lecture will also serve as the inaugural lecture for the new GHI director, Ulrike von Hirschhausen. In her lecture, Hirschhausen will introduce the concept of “frozen conflicts” in the 20th and 21st centuries. She will explain how these conflicts can emerge from disputed de facto states and why the legacy of empire continues to influence the situation today. The lecture will present a new conceptual framework applicable to these conflicts worldwide.

The lecture begins at 6pm, with doors opening at 5:30 pm. The lecture will also be streamed.

The lecture will discuss how Latin and German texts written 500 years ago influenced the linguistic and historical development of early modern and modern Germany, looking at examples from nuns’ letters, Reformation pamphlets, and songs. This is part of a project to write a cultural history of Germany by developing a historical narrative which combines linguistic changes with political, social, and cultural topics, arguing that early 16th-century texts and agendas still have an impact today.

Henrike Lähnemann is Professor of Medieval German Literature and Linguistics at the University of Oxford. Her research interests are female religious communities in Northern Germany in the late Middle Ages, visual culture, and sociolinguistics in a historical perspective.

Wappen entstanden im 12. Jahrhundert und setzen sich seitdem aus Figuren und Farben zusammen. Letztere, insgesamt sechs, lassen sich in zwei Gruppen unterteilen: In der ersten befinden sich die Farben Weiß und Gelb, in der zweiten die Farben Rot, Blau, Schwarz und Grün. Bei der Gestaltung von Wappen gibt es eine strenge Regel, die es verbietet, zwei Farben aus derselben Gruppe nebeneinander oder übereinander zu verwenden. Im Mittelalter gibt es nur sehr wenige Ausnahmen von dieser Regel, die seit den Anfängen des Wappenwesens besteht.

Warum gibt es eine solche Regel? Woher stammt sie? Hat die Heraldik sie aus einem anderen Zeichensystem übernommen? Lässt sie sich auf materielle, technische, visuelle oder symbolische Ursachen zurückführen? Wie rechtfertigen die Herolde sie? Auf all diese Fragen versucht der Vortrag eine Antwort zu finden.

This interdisciplinary Summer Academy invites advanced MA students, doctoral candidates, and early postdoctoral researchers to explore the role of epigraphy in shaping Istanbul’s urban, sacred, and imperial spaces across antiquity, the Byzantine era, and the Ottoman period.

Inscriptions constitute not only documents but also monuments or artefacts situated in specific spatial settings, where they actively mark and articulate thresholds. This conviction forms the basis for all further inquiries of the academy. Building on this perspective, the program will examine how epigraphic texts delineate transitions between sacred and profane, interior and exterior, imperial and civic. Inscriptions on palatial gates and entrances to religious buildings, on convent walls, and along the Bosporus shoreline in Üsküdar (a major point of passage between Anatolia and Istanbul) will serve as case studies.

Sessions will combine seminar discussions with excursions in the city, allowing participants to engage with inscriptions both in a classroom setting and in situ. Student presentations will alternate with contributions by the faculty, fostering an interactive and dialogical format. Emphasis will be placed not only on decipherment but also on the physical setting, visibility, and performative dimensions of each inscription. Broader questions and comparative approaches are welcome.

Working knowledge of at least one epigraphic language (Ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, etc.) is recommended.

Costs for accommodation will be supported. Lunch as well as two group dinners will be covered.

Den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern der Spring School wird die Möglichkeit geboten, an ausgewählten originalen Schauplätzen (z. B. Botschaften, Medienhäuser, Forschungsinstitute und Museen) die Internationalität Roms in der Moderne in Augenschein zu nehmen, um diese sodann mit Unterstützung fachkundiger Kenner und Kennerinnen näher zu ergründen. Weiterhin sollen in verschiedenen Archiven die Suche nach Quellen und die quellenkritische Arbeit mit historischem Material eingeübt werden.

In methodischer Hinsicht zielt die Spring School darauf ab, die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer mit transnationalen Zugängen zur italienischen Zeitgeschichte vertraut zu machen. Gleichzeitig werden sie die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten, in Rom wissenschaftlich zu arbeiten, kennenlernen.

Das Deutsche Historische Institut übernimmt die Kosten für fünf Übernachtungen mit Frühstück in einem Doppelzimmer und gibt einen pauschalen Unkostenbeitrag von 150 €. Die Anreise erfolgt am 8. März, die Abreise am Nachmittag des 13. März 2026.

Die Bewerbung steht allen fortgeschrittenen Studierenden deutscher und italienischer Hochschulen nach erfolgreichem Besuch eines Proseminars im Bereich der Neueren Geschichte und vor Abschluss des Masters offen. Erforderlich sind sehr gute Deutschkenntnisse.

Das Symposium beleuchtet sowohl historische als auch zeitgenössische Karrierewege von Musikwissenschaftler*innen im Ausland. Es richtet den Fokus auf Aspekte der Internationalisierung, Institutionalisierung und Netzwerkbildung sowie auf bestehende Hürden und Strategien zu deren Überwindung.

Die Gründe für akademische Mobilität sind vielfältig: Zugang zu Quellenmaterial und berufliche Möglichkeiten im Ausland, Kulturpolitik, Internationalisierung der Forschungslandschaft, Gründung von Institutionen, persönliche und berufliche Netzwerke usw.

Akademische Mobilität kann das Ergebnis einer bewussten Entscheidung, aber auch durch politischen Druck und Verfolgung erzwungen sein. Internationale Biografien – etwa von Wissenschaftler*innen wie Higinio Anglès, Alfred Einstein, Vladimír Karbusický, Zofia Lissa oder Kathi Meyer-Baer – zeugen von den Verflechtungen von Musik, Forschung und Politik sowie von der historischen Bedeutung und allzu oft sogar lebenswichtigen Notwendigkeit von Mobilität im Bereich der Musikwissenschaft.

Illustrating the emergence of a field of research, several programmatic articles have been written on the particular problems and promises of conceptual history in different linguistic contexts. Building upon these developments, and as a culmination of the efforts of the organizers this Meeting will both identify historical evolutions and entanglements of concepts within the Bengal-to-Balkans-complex and critically discuss the theoretical implications and potentials of conceptual history in the region.

In terms of research foci, the Summer Meeting aims at (1) strengthening the notion of entanglement in conceptual history, and (2) furthering self-reflectivity in and critique of the usage of established concepts. By exploring conceptual entanglements in the history of the region together, we intend to overcome the long-standing limits imposed on historical research by methodological nationalism and disciplinary boundaries in area studies. Moreover, by focusing on the history of indigenous (emic) concepts we aim to come up with revised and better narratives and analytical (etic) categories to explain the historical transformations in the wake of post-colonial interventions which challenged Euro-centric paradigms.

Critically appropriating the various approaches to historical semantics for the particular problems and research questions of the region is also a central concern for the Summer Meeting. Conceptual histories of the region addresses both the paradigmatic problems and questions of area studies scholarship and also the fast growing global intellectual history. The growing number of programmatic publications in the field is evidence of this^[1] and the Summer Meeting is inspired by the example of the CONCEPTA summer schools, the first launched in 2006 in Helsinki (in its 18^th year now), the second launched in 2017 in Mexico. The Meeting intends to enhance networks of research, foster collaboration and pass on expertise to a new generation of PhD students and junior scholars whose work covers one or more of the languages of the region and are interested in working with history of concepts.

Our 11th Gerda Henkel Lecture Tour features Dorothee Brantz, an urban environmental historian and director of the Center for Metropolitan Studies at Technische Universität Berlin. Her lecture "Urban Seasonalities: Time, Culture, and the Environment in Summer Resorts and Winter Cities around 1900 and Today", explores how climate, weather, and the seasons shaped urban life in the late 19th century compared to today, taking us from Canadian winter cities to Central European summer resorts (Sommerfrische).

Dorothee Brantz received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2003. Her areas of research include transatlantic urban history, human-animal relations, and the social theory of time in urban studies. Currently, she is working on a book project about seasons in the city around 1900 and 2000. Her most recent publication on this topic is “Why Study the Seasons?” Journal of Urban History 51 (January 2025), 81-91.

Since 2018, the Pacific Office of the German Historical Institute Washington has organized these lecture tours in partnership with the Gerda Henkel Foundation, bringing German historians to the West Coast to share their latest research and engage with audiences in the United States and Canada.
