The German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ Tokyo) researches the society, economy, politics, culture, and international relations of modern Japan from a multidisciplinary perspective. Located in Tokyo and rooted in the German academic system, the DIJ is a unique academic institution in the international research landscape. The Institute enjoys high recognition in social science and humanities research on Japan beyond the host country and Germany. Its current research foci are Digital Transformation, the Future of Communities in Japan, Japan in a Transregional Perspective, and Methods and Methodologies.
The DIJ cooperates in numerous projects with research institutes from all over the world. Since 2017, it has maintained its own research group at the National University of Singapore with a research focus on the role of Japan in Southeast Asia.
